@mttaggart a beautiful sentiment; if I can "yes, and" a bit here: things are not just "not worse" than they used to be if you are a small internet node, there are a lot of things that make the "boring internet" far more accessible than they used to be back in the day. it's not merely protocols. cloud hosting is a commodity supplied by dozens of vendors. I grew up in the days of racking & stacking, scrounging for a free space on a friend's colo box, and it's *so* much easier now.

@glyph Completely agreed. While the scalers were scaling, the basics became so much easier and attainable.

And I still love the act of creation that is Making A Website.

@mttaggart there are free tiers and super cheap domain registration and just all kinds of stuff all over the place to let you run on an absolute shoestring both financially and operationally. truly there is an underground golden age happening (and fedi is of course part of it)

              The Boring Internet

The internet you grew up on isn't dying. A commercial veneer glued on top of it is. A visual essay about the protocols, federations, and quiet machinery underneath everything you actually use.

@mttaggart but I just got an image of a dragon putting out a fire that a phoenix just accidentally set in a cafe.

I'm sure I can somehow increase the irony here.

@mttaggart Thank you for this 👍! You raised my spirits just as I'm feeling hopelessly surrounded by money grubbing 'tech bros'.

I definitely need to learn more!

@mttaggart I am worried they may try to control this at the isp level though…hard to run things on the internet w/o cloudflare
