@alice It seems absurd to try to pull that shit here — do they not see all the Linux postings? Who do they think they’re dealing with?
@michaelgemar @alice
I don't think we're dealing with especially bright people. When your cost is near zero, even vanishingly small hit rates can be profitable. But I'd like to think that even margin is incredibly low on Mastodon. -

@alice Sadly, they don't need a high response rate. There will always be a few newcomers who haven't yet been inoculated

@alice It’s been a torrent of scammers today, for sure. Obviously a coordinated effort from someone but yeah, you’d think people here would be wise to it. Hopefully, anyway.

@alice Thank you! I have to say I slightly fell for it, because of how they blocked the instance name, I had to open it up in a browser to read the instance name (mastodon. cloud, which is not mine) I then reported it, along with about 25 other recent examples. I sent the anonymized report to mastodon (dot) cloud, I think that the right thing to do. Was it #infosec friends?

I've never seen one of these.
Russian bots OTOH... a LOT! That said, they've not been so present lately. Maybe they've started to 'auto-block' me so I can't Report them.

A support line without at least 45 minutes of hold time? Proactively reaching out?
Nah, not falling for that one...

They do it on purpose. The thinking is that if most people who aren't going to be scammed just don't respond then they get to spend more time on people who are less likely to realize.
The strategy is also that if they make it an "obvious scam" in hindsight that people are going to be too embarrassed to report it.
Posts like this to a point helps them, it cements the idea that you have to be really dumb to fall for it, thus embarrassment.
Being kind to victims is really important!

@hp I'd never shame the victim of a crime, or someone who was taken advantage of.
The parasitic scammers, however, are fair game.
Fuck those guys¹.
