🚨 ID checks to get online could become the new norm 🚨

A new amendment would give the UK government sweeping powers to block access to lawful information and communications.

That's unless we submit our identification to a bounty of providers.

Take action! What’s the problem? The Government has proposed amendments to the Children Wellbeing and Schools Bill, which would give Ministers the power to restrict access to "internet services". This is supposed to give the Government the power to ban under 16s from social media but “internet services" is a very broad definition, which means any online platform can be

@openrightsgroup this kind of stuff happened in [you guess which country] 20 years ago. Initially for games. no pushback. even largely welcomed. Expanded to social media and chat apps around 10 years ago. Some complaints, no pushback. Now you get police knocking at your door if you post or just chat certain things online. still basically no pushback. People just accept it. The amount of people willing to just take whatever shit is saddening.

@openrightsgroup once a generation grows up with mass surveillance as part of their life, they normalize it and they defend the surveillance. But before us old folks die out. We try as much as we can.

This is no longer about banning under-16s from social media.

It’s about control over all information and forcing adults to go through digital ID checks to access the Internet.

Forcing us to submit our identity or biometric data to an array of different providers poses significant privacy risks.

@openrightsgroup It's also about making a barrier to entry for new providers that (mostly Amerikaanse) BigTech have already cleared, thus allowing them to corner the market. #fuckBigTech

@openrightsgroup exactly what i said they would do.

Protect the children is always the excuse to destroy privacy.
they actually don't care at all about children, for proof their representative in the US was a pedophile.

@anomalocarididae @openrightsgroup and now the state of California has decided to start down this road with their requirements of operating systems to have an age attestation mechanism touching every conceivable piece of software.

Imagine this, I need to search the Apt repository for dumb-app, but I need to verify my age! So, curl, ls, less, more, wc plus thousands of little binaries in a Unix like system.

            Governor Newsom is trash.

They toe the party line and are not moved by what their constituents say (with exceptions, I guess).

@openrightsgroup I think this is social media‘s backlash against being held accountable for the devastating effect. Social media has on young people and it actually has a bad effect on adults too. But they pretend it’s about caring about children. That’s what sickens me. How they do everything but solve the problem.

@csgraves @anomalocarididae @openrightsgroup It's scary to think they might submit badly-written PRs implementing their policies.
