everyone is spying on you from your phone to car. Trillions of miles of data: Your car is spying on you, and it's only just the beginning https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20260513-your-car-is-spying-on-you-its-about-to-get-worse

From your weight and facial expressions to your destination, cars collect a startling amount of data about you. Some of it may even raise your insurance costs. But you can take some simple steps to limit what they know about you.

@nixCraft this isnโ€™t just a personal issue but a governance one too. We need to collectively build a culture that curtails profit-motivated surveillance (that eventually become part of intelligence apparatuses).

@nixCraft Letโ€™s keep old cars alive.

We have retrocomputing for old computers and we can make retrocars without all this tech nonsense.

@SamuraiSakura @nixCraft when you have an old enough new car it stops spying on you. Nissan dropped the interwebs connectivity of my 2011 LEAF at 8 years old. ๐Ÿ˜…

And I'd be quite surprised if the 2019 lowest trim e-NV200 I have now called home given it has no connectivity for anything else.

@nixCraft My 2022 Chevy Spark has OnStar which is stupid spy heavy. I just removed the fuse that controls the OnStar module though. I recently swapped out the whole stereo too with a custom pi setup I made. It actually turned out great and runs plasma mobile!

This morning I read the same article, even the linked ones with the research from Mozilla Foundation. I am not quite sure that removing the sim card would solve it, but at least it is something, maybe the best, that can be done at all in the situation we are forced in.

@jago @SamuraiSakura @nixCraft 3G is no more in Norway and 2G is on its way out, only Telenor has kept 2G open and then only until the end of 2027.

It is also an issue for me that I only use FOSS software and OSs in my daily life.

I am still looking forward to the day when I can install say "LinuxMint Auto Edition" on a vehicle thus removing all of the spyware built into the OSs and apps that modern cars run.

@the_wub @SamuraiSakura @nixCraft Same, Arch on computers, PostmarketOS on phone.

I'm actually building a Linux head unit for my e-NV200. Not the cheapo "linux radio" sold in stores, but a full Linux computer out of Raspberry pi 5 and the official 7" display.

Mostly for playing my ogg & flac collection, but maybe I'll think up other apps when I get there.
