      @tmarble As a Canadian I don't really understand why the U.S. doesn't unilaterally require ID to vote. I'm not saying this particular bill is good or not but clearly there are some fundamental things that need fixing.

        @purpleidea @tmarble What needs fixing? There has never been any documented evidence of significant voter fraud in any federal election in the US, and I don't think there has been any in any state elections either. Since "national ID" has its own problems and will end up disenfranchising people who have the right to vote, doing it in order to address a problem which doesn't exist is a bad plan.

          @kevin @tmarble Just the Canadian perspective here but if you can't get every eligible United Statesian an ID card then that feels like a serious structural problem that needs fixing.

            @purpleidea @tmarble Alternatively: many people here don't want a national/federal ID (in spite of most people have Social Security Numbers and other things already). It's a very complex discussion.
