@funnymonkey "We saw what happened a decade ago when Google tried it, and people have only gotten more hostile to surveillance tech, so clearly it's the time to launch it NOW, right guys?"

Honestly, I've got to imagine that Zuckerberg will provide an entire course in future law as to "How you don't let a single person have total control of a multi-billion dollar business"

Conferences need to put a ban on Meta glasses into their codes of conduct.

Conference attendees should be required to either leave their electronic devices at home or unsubscribe to Meta before attending.

            > Five years ago, Facebook shut down the facial recognition system for tagging people in photos on its social network, saying it wanted to find “the right balance” for a technology that raises privacy and legal concerns.

            > Now it wants to bring facial recognition back.

            > Meta, Facebook’s parent company, plans to add the feature to its smart glasses, which it makes with the owner of Ray-Ban and Oakley, as soon as this year, according to four people involved with the plans who were not authorized to speak publicly about confidential discussions. The feature, internally called “Name Tag,” would let wearers of smart glasses identify people and get information about them via Meta’s artificial intelligence assistant.

            > Meta’s plans could change. The Silicon Valley company has been conferring since early last year about how to release a feature that carries “safety and privacy risks,” according to an internal document viewed by The New York Times.

            > The document, from May, described plans to first release Name Tag to attendees of a conference for the blind, which the company did not do last year, before making it available to the general public.

            > Meta’s internal memo said the political tumult in the United States was good timing for the feature’s release.

@i47i @funnymonkey I understand your concerns, but for us blind people it would be a huge help. Many of us use those glasses every day and solve problems that were absolutely unsolvable before.

Smart glasses and even AI when used as an adaptive support for people with disabilities is always a good thing.... the problem is that the corporations behind these technologies are using them to exploit people and violate their privacy.

Our governments are failing us because we need legislation that regulates these technologies so that appropriate uses are allowed but corporate abuses are not.

How could the truly lifechanging and needed accessibility features be implemented without the Meta data extraction and stalkerware?

Let's support accessibility, and absolutely reject the people like Zuckerberg who cynically pervert real accessibility needs to further a surveillance empire.

@funnymonkey In the ideal world it would be a kickstarter company, then prototyping, testing by blind people, open-source software with independent audits. But in practice… blindness market is always a super-mega-niche thing. I won't write a War and Peace about it (if you wish, I can though) just not to make you tired, but read about Braille displays and their cost, for example, or for that matter about any special devices and their cost. I used to support such a small startup, in the end they just silently stopped selling their glasses and updating the software.
