Balcony solar is taking US state legislatures by storm. In more than half of states, Republican and Democratic lawmakers have introduced legislation that would boost adoption of small plug-in solar panels that sit on apartment balconies and plug directly into household outlets. The simple technology is already in use in millions of households in Germany. @adapalmer
In Germany the legislation allows 800W delivery with up to 960/2000Wp panels.

And I'd consider $400 pricey for 220W, as you can get a 800W set for 300€ / $350 over here.

Up here (Germany is roughly Winipeg/Calgary latitude) you roughly get the W-number in kWh per year (more in sunny latitudes), thus break-even here is in about a year (or less).
With 30+ years of expected lifetime that's 97% annual return of investment rate, maintenance free.

@vampirdaddy @adapalmer There are some legal gotchas to be aware. Around here anything put on the outside of balcony be it flower box or antennas, is responsibility of the house, i.e if something falls and hurts someone, it's the house manager who will be in court, not resident who installed it. For this reason most houses flatout deny any outside installations.
