You just wonder what sort of people work at the Home Office; are they inculcated once they arrive, or does it attract the vindictive proceduralists who delight in saying 'no' to reasonable attempts to resolve problems caused by byzantine regulation(s)?

@ChrisMayLA6 Oh for the days of "Yes Minister" (or Yes Prime Minister) when the UK Civil Service was a an amusing joke, rather than a sad one.

@ChrisMayLA6 If Kafkaesque shit floats to the top, maybe it was not a good idea to promote the Home Office Permanent Secretary to be Cabinet Secretary and Head of the Civil Service.

Or maybe that’s exactly the sort of person Starmer wants.

@ChrisMayLA6 the home office definitely needs a review because the people there seem to be causing a lot of issues.

I don't know much about the dual nationality issue, is it a new thing? My kids have dual nationalities.

                          @ChrisMayLA6 @JugglingWithEggs

25 years ago I failed at the last interview stage for the Civil Service Fast Track programme. The rejection letter said that I’d performed very well in nearly every part of the recruitment process but I was being rejected because - I kid you not - the interview had demonstrated the strength of my commitment to my ethics & values.

Never been so happy to fail in my life.

@ChrisMayLA6 this is not restricted to the UK, France for example, does similar. Ryanair also states what documentation is needed when you book and check in. Perhaps airports should provide a document checking service prior to customs when departing.

At a human level it sucks for sure.

Charging UK nationals so much for a bit of paper that visitors pay a pitance for is very poor though.

@ChrisMayLA6 @tpuddle I don’t know if you’re familiar with Warhammer 40k, but there’s a reason why I think the Adeptus Administratum in that franchise is the most quintessentially British thing about it.

@shemjm @ChrisMayLA6 British dual nationals (whose other nationality isn't Irish) can't travel into the UK solely on the base of their other nationality passports, as of not-very-long ago.

@shemjm @ChrisMayLA6 This doesn't affect those Brits who have obtained Irish passports as an anti-#brexshit measure. They can continue to enter the UK with their Irish passports, and thus still don't have to pay twice for an inferior product.

@ChrisMayLA6 this is not restricted to the UK, France for example, does similar. Ryanair also states what documentation is needed when you book and check in. Perhaps airports should provide a document checking service prior to customs when departing.

At a human level it sucks for sure.

Charging UK nationals so much for a bit of paper that visitors pay a pitance for is very poor though.

as is transferring over enforcement to risk adverse airlines (who are known to refuse boarding even when actually the documents are sufficient, but they just don't know enough about the legal side to know they are).

@shemjm @ChrisMayLA6 British dual nationals (whose other nationality isn't Irish) can't travel into the UK solely on the base of their other nationality passports, as of not-very-long ago.

@TimWardCam @ChrisMayLA6 oh that's fine, so as long as I use our British passports when coming home it's fine. Sounds simple enough.

The Home Office Kafka tribute act continues, stranding the mother of a baby with dual nationality in Austria, as her case does not qualify for emergency documents to allow her to travel home.

You just wonder what sort of people work at the Home Office; are they inculcated once they arrive, or does it attract the vindictive proceduralists who delight in saying 'no' to reasonable attempts to resolve problems caused by byzantine regulation(s)?

@ChrisMayLA6 My Dad applied in 🇨🇦 for the emergency document when his brother went into hospital.

His brother has died, been cremated, the funeral held...

                                          No emergency document, still.

I was going to get a passport for me and my kids, but the docs required means the applications would have to be one after the other and take about 3 months. That is assuming it's not considered an emergency and gets processed in the specified time.

I suppose we should be relieved that Douglas Adams was wrong: the Vogons didn't destroy the Earth. They just took over the 🇬🇧 government.
