@birdsarah Never saw this hilarious way of putting a bird on a scale
. Seems to work pretty good though. -

@birdsarah thank you for sharing your insights! weighting the bird looks a bit funny and I hope its not too stressful for them.

@moiety upside down in a cup prevents it from flying off while being weighed, the top of the wings are trapped inside and it's dark inside so it's not too stressful

@paul_cS should not be too stressful no! they're only in there for a matter of seconds, and it's the last thing we do before releasing them - entire banding process goes quite quickly, and they're inside a dark bag (calms them down) until we handle them

@birdsarah it's not a very dignified posture on the scales

What's a film roll cup?@stragu back before most photography was digital, you had to put blank film rolls into your camera which you had to send in to companies developing the film roll into actual photos. These rolls came in these tiny cute plastic cups which were very useful to store small stuff once the photos were developed. I still have some ancient ones around to store seeds for example

@birdsarah it's honestly my favorite thing that the apparent offical technique to weigh birds is just "put that little fool into a tube facedown"

@birdsarah The loud, RAUCOUS laughter this startled out me, oh my God. People are looking at me from across the quad.
