If those of you using Android could click on this link and tell me whether it does anything even remotely useful, and if so, some detail about how horrible/stupid the whole experience is, that would be helpful: https://www.jwz.org/images/2026/test.pkpass

And tell me what version you're using, obviously. Possibly this requires some "Play" [sic] stuff to work.

UPDATE: Thanks! You can stop now.

(Unless you have read the dozens of replies and have had a materially different experience than those.)

@jwz Android 15, downloaded a pkpass, the phone didn't let me open it or guide me to open it.

If someone has an explanation for who gets "Unsupported file type" and who gets "Download / Open / Pick wallet app", that would be nice. I assume it has something to do with "Play" [sic] having its claws in?

@jwz That was the end of the road on the "no braining just clicking the buttons" experience.

Trying to open Google Wallet to import: It didn't have any way to import files from the app itself.

Trying to open Files/Downloads and opening it again, and now it prompted me to add it to Google Wallet. From there, imported fine similarly to others' report.

@jwz As far as I can tell, I get "pick wallet" if I have recently opened Google Wallet. If not, I get "unsupported file".

I have and use GW regularly, even for buying groceries yesterday, so it does not appear to be a "first time" problem.

@jwz I've done Apple Wallet and Google Wallet integrations for my box office ticketing system.

I'm going to a conference Monday - Wednesday this week, but if you haven't got anywhere with this by Thursday I will happily walk you through how my version of this works and the problems I had to solve along the way. I found the Google integration much easier than the Apple one, fwiw.

@bencurthoys It appears, so far, that most Android phones can open Apple pkpass files with only the level of stupid hoop-jumping to which Android users are already well accustomed, so I think I can continue with my current stance of "doing nothing".

@jwz Google Pixel 10a with Firefox. Downloaded fine, but had to do a couple extra clicks to load it into Google wallet.

Four years ago I asked whether "Google Pass" was a thing that I needed to give a shit about and consensus was, "no, nobody uses that." But I have heard anecdotally, recently, that this might no longer be true. Thoughts?

The goal here is, "reduce the amount of time it takes for someone standing in front of my nightclub to wave their QR code at the door staff."

Note: I don't use Android and know as little about its ecosystem as possible, so please use small words.
