The WSJ reported last October that Musk had been in regular contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin since late 2022 and also that his contacts with foreign nationals led SpaceX lawyers to advise him against seeking a higher security clearance over fears that he might have to explain the relationships or have his clearance revoked entirely.

A joint DHS and DOJ probe found that Elon Musk met with foreign nationals frequently between 2022 and 2023 as insiders also said he met with them during the 2024 election
