Ubuntu is Going Big on AI (But Not The Copilot Kind You Dread)

Canonical's plan favors local inference and open models over cloud-dependent AI services.

@itsfoss I don't have a problem with this, Canonical/Ubuntu is enterprise so they have to keep up and keep moving forward. The difference here is, in Ubuntu you will be able to disable it, at the moment by removing the AI snap packages. Unlike other OS's where it is backed in forced on you. It looks like it is an opt in, I would like to see maybe in the future the AI functionality be an option in the installer similar to how third party apps are handled.

@itsfoss Great. Nice.... So how's Mint Debian Edition doing? Do we have LMDE users here? I do no gaming 😉 and I'm thinking of switching on my Thinkpad after positive first impressions with regular Mint on T2 Macbooks. (Mint boots 2x faster on 2018 Macbook Air with 8GB RAM than Ubuntu on ThinkPad with 2x more RAM and 5-6x faster CPU 🙆‍♂️).

@ati1 @itsfoss Give it a shot. You won't really know if you like it until you try it. Linux Mint was the first distro I stuck with in order to learn my way around.

@ubuntuportugal @itsfoss yes I understand, that is what I meant by opt in not baked in and enabled by default.

@itsfoss Oh great, even more crap Mint has to strip out along all the broken Rust code and utils. Really starting to think I need to switch to LMDE or just go straight up Debian.

I use LMDE 7 on my MacBook from 2011 an it runs like a charme. A well oiled machine.

I have no problems with such things as long as it's opt-in and I can choose wether to use it or not.

@itsfoss As always, my only question will be how to turn it off.
