Hottest of hot takes: only people who deeply give a fuck about the thing should run companies that make the thing. Cheeseburgers, software, doesn't matter. If your Steam library is empty, you don't get to run a games studio.
I would extend it a bit: you are only allowed to invest in a company if you deeply give a fuck about the thing they are doing/making. (This includes buying stocks, shares and any other financial jargon I'm not well versed in.)

More controversial opinion: When I think about it, it should also apply to politics:
If your steam library is empty, you are not allowed to make decisions about games.
If you are not trans, you don't get to decide anything about trans people.

@Daojoan It is literally impossible for me to agree more with a thing that someone has ever said.

@dragonfi @Daojoan I will say that no one can be all the things. With something like politics, it doesn't work. That's why consultation is a thing that exists. Unfortunately, they've forgotten (yeah ok, they haven't forgotten, they're just ignoring it.)
So, for example, for making game-related decisions, they should have to consult with gamers or some kind of "experts on gaming" (like people who have done deep studies or something? I don't know. One would have to be very careful to avoid too much of a divide.) And they should have to consult trans people for making decisions about trans people. And, of course, they should be required to not just blatantly ignore what they were told...
The positions provide them with the means to do exactly this. They simply choose not to.

@Daojoan But the only thing companies really are supposed to make these days is profit, and I don't get the impression that the people in charge hold back with deep fucks about that.

@Daojoan hot take: monetisation will eventually ruin everything we care about!!

@Daojoan but but…. im absolutely totally obsessed with money so im allowed to run a company that makes money?!?!?
(but my money collection is empty so i probably don’t qualify, it’s just for people with rich parents probably)

Not a hot take at all in my book; absolutely agree with every line.
PS Iwata was a legend in my book. He walked the walk in so many ways.

This triggers thinking, ..... if all new development projects were funded only from "crowd sourcing" ..... because there was no surplus of "investment money" seeking profit .....

@Daojoan Great commentary. Can't really object to anything you've said there.

@Daojoan Ray Kroc and Tim Cook I don't think either cared much about what was being made, they cared about how to do it better.
Mary Barra and Ferdinand Piëch one is GM royalty the other is a Porsche. Piëch was a car guy and created the VW of today through acquisition. Barra isn't really a car person and created the GM of today by divesting GM of companies and partnerships. I wouldn't call with company unsuccessful.
Some people just like to solve problems

@Daojoan I was reading your post on the gutenberg parenthesis. I searched about, and found this book, The Gutenberg Parenthesis, The Age of Print and Its Lessons for the Age of the Internet by Jeff Jarvis. Now this should be an interesting read. Have you read this while writing that?

I once worked for a company that was taken over by an accountant who cared about nothing except money and control, and who eventually ran the company into the ground. I can't disagree with your hot take.
I might make an exception for drug barons and madams.

@Daojoan I'm currently entertaining the best way to distribute this article at my job without the whole thing becoming a reenactment of Jerry McGuire
