      (BONUS POLL)

Which of the following music media, if someone suddenly handed you a piece of music recorded on it, would you be able to play without making additional purchases?

      NOTES:

      - If the answer is "none of the above" ,click "Show results". We can probably compare the previous poll to judge the significance of the scale of responses.

      - Rather than worrying about differences between reel-to-reel formats, answer "reel to reel tape" if you can play at least one reel to reel tape format.

      @mcc
I've used/owned most of those media players/formats as either a consumer or broadcaster (brief career before I switched to IT).

In the late 90s, I learned about the mp3 format, got a CD burner and ditched all my vinyl and cassettes. By the time USB media players were prevalent, the only CD players I had were in desktop/laptop computers. (I'd have to go searching in the closet for one of those now.)

Frankly, it's been MP3's and nothing else for me for more than 25 years now.

@mcc lol none. Unless a CD in an old XBox 360 with only a TV for audio output counts.

@mcc This poll makes me once again regret giving away my portable minidisc player (and stereo component minidisc recorder), the pinnacle of futuristic portable music in the 90s.

I loved how those portable players had a boatload of RAM (for the time) so they could buffer enough to survive seek overhead on RW discs and only spin up the motor every now and again on pressed discs.

@swetland unfortunately they're all dying. Even the Hi-MD deck I imported from Japan was started showing issues playing some discs. Idk if it's something to do with the laser components or the recordable mediums degrading, but I fear they won't be functional for many more decades (unlike cassette players, even though the tapes might die, we can make new ones comparatively easily).

@swetland @mcc I’ve still got my Sony MD Walkman as well as my full sized Sony MD deck. I was a big cassette taper of live shows in the 80s and when MD came out I switched to it. I eventually moved to DAT for convenience. Still I have a ton of live music recordings on MD that I enjoy listening to. Getting the music off of those disks into MP3 format is a real chore though and I worry that someday that deck is going to fail on me.

@mcc a couple of my musician friends have given me vinyl LPs of their latest music recently. They're just sitting in shrinkwrap on a shelf here. The last time I used a turntable was a roommate's in college. I also had a cassette Walkman back then, which got way more use.

We had a 1976 Ford Mustang II with 8 track player when I was a kid. Nothing else that played them.

@mcc I still use my MZ-RH1 to do live recordings. I must have hundreds of hours of session & concert recordings on MD still.

i answered yes anyway because i have at least one local friend that would let me use at least one working reel to reel. this is making me wish i had hung on to that 8-track player. and making me really wish i had looked into that pianola that appeared on the curb in my neighborhood last year

@mcc the 2001 Toyota I had until 2018 could play a tape or a CD. That was the last time I touched a tape player.

Poll: Which of the following music media, if someone suddenly handed you a piece of music recorded on it, would you be able to play without making additional purchases?

@mcc If I didn't move to a different country like 6 times the answer would be "all of the above". Unfortunately, I moved to a different country like 6 times. All my possessions fit into two 30kg travel cases, a duffel bag, and a camera backpack 😄

@brunoph @swetland the OLED display on my MZ RH1 is dimmer, and I had to replace the gumstick battery, but it's still working fine.
