Study finds conservative Americans experienced worse health outcomes & higher mortality rates than their liberal counterparts over past decade. Stems from demographic shifts within political coalitions & distrust in medical professionals among right-leaning individuals. https://www.psypost.org/declining-trust-in-doctors-is-widening-the-health-gap-between-conservative-and-liberal-americans/

"distrust in medical professionals" is a qualifier to, perhaps, get a Darwin Award, eventually ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darwin_Awards ) 🤣

I think the paper is right that trust is an issue, but I can tell you that it's not the only one.

Many consrvts live in rural areas that have little to no health access, with the nearest doctor being over an hour away and hospitals being 2-3. They often work blue collar jobs with poor benefits.

Seeking medical care can be perceived as weakness, especially if treatment is ongoing medication. it's natural to avoid stigma that could cause social isolation.

The lack of trust isn't just anti-science sentiment either. In fact, I think the broken trust triggered anti-science, not the other way around. Medical Trust can be lost many ways - often through flaws in the system and the care that's provided. “it won't help so why try?" is a common feeling.

To be clear, I'm not defending MAGA fascist or racist conservatives: I'm simply trying to show that the health impacts are far more complicated than anti-science sentiment.

We can't make things better, or reach people, without a good understanding of complex causes.
