    When I first tried to read #TheLordOfTheRings some 25 years ago, I made the mistake of buying a "compact" one-volume paperback edition that wasn't very comfortable to read. I gave up just a few chapters in.

    I'm now #reading the gorgeous Alan Lee illustrated box set, and what a difference it makes! I'm still at the Prancing Pony, trying hard not to read too fast because I want to savour every word and take in every detail.

        "PPPS. I hope Butterbur sends this promptly. A worthy man, but his memory is like a lumber-room: thing wanted always buried. If he forgets, I shall roast him."

        Sassy Gandalf. What an absolute legend.

            @astro_jcm Oh, you're in for such a treat!

            When encountering people who haven't read the trilogy, I often suggest starting at chapter 6 of Fellowship when JRRT finally figures out what kind of book he's writing / things get moving / it's not just a lot of geneology and soap opera.

              I see Tolkien is in fine company on your bookshelf. Very nice.

                @c_dan4th I think some purists might report you to the Tolkien police for that 😄 But yeah, I get it. With this second attempt I went in knowing already what to expect from those first few chapters, and I ended up enjoying them quite a bit. But the first time back in the 2000s I found them to be more of a challenge (and English not being my first language didn't help...). Really looking forward to the adventure ahead!

                  @astro_jcm I am a Tolkien purist and I have Opinions ;-).

                  On your first read, you can skip the first five chapters, especially if you've seen the films and know the general lay of the land. On your subsequent reads (of which there will be many), go back and hit the first quarter of book 1.
