okay even if you don't agree with me that persuasion is an effective strategy to achieve certain goals, we all _gotta_ get on the same page about this.

also if I do say so myself "respect does not equate to obeisance" is a banger

@glyph and also redefining kilobytes to 1000s was a crime.

Also*, I am not saying here that we have to accept everyone at all times. Of course there are lines, and some of us put them in different places. Doctorow is still more or less fine in my book. Good even. I understand and respect that others may be much more frustrated with him over this, but I am okay disagreeing with just this take. Whereas, for example, Dawkins can eat shit, as far as I am concerned.
*: for fuck’s sake

@vathpela gonna have to part ways with you on that one. SI prefixes have SI meanings! If you want kibibytes you should say so!

@vathpela (was this a Knuth-ism? not something I knew about)

@glyph I had thought it was, and it looks like he was involved, though wiki says he was advocating for KB=1000 and "large kilobyte" ("KKB") being 1024.
Which would have been, wellm also confusing. But I think what we've wound up with didn't alleviate any confusion either.

@glyph Personally I've downgraded my opinion of him from "I think he's mostly correct." to "I think he's been mostly correct. (Watch with concern)" Which, honestly, is probably a healthier approach in general. I expect I'll probably agree with most things he writes going forward; certainly not all of them.

@glyph it's the Nobel Disease. And not having won a Nobel unfortunately doesn't make one immune to it

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nobel_disease@gedankenstuecke definitely not a novel phenomenon, although this is my favorite representation of it: https://www.smbc-comics.com/comic/2012-03-21
