I root through the bins of local stores. They throw out food past the marked date even if it isn't spoiled. I've cut my food expenditure in half. Why waste money and food?

@fesshole Careful: some places don't like that.

@fesshole check *too good to go* and *food sharing*
Same idea but without the food entering a trashcan in between

@aeveltstra @fesshole It's even illegal in Germany, regarded as theft by the cops.

@fesshole In France, stores are not allowed to throw out perfectly good food anymore. They have to give it to food banks. It's the law.

@shadowwwind not sure about other regions, but TGTG here still requires you to pay, albeit much less than its original worth. Though the downside is you don't get to pick and choose.
                    It's a good suggestion though. 🙂
We used to have another one, Throw No More I think it was? Which would list all discounted goods due to expiring sell-by-dates/use-by-dates from various shops, but unfortunately that's not available anymore as several other grocery stores have implemented similiar functionality into their own individual apps... so now you have to check several apps instead of a single one. 😞 Again, not free though.

@severtz same here. They are usually the first shelves I browse through. Though some shops are better at it than others. Yesterday I saw bags of mixed lettuce at the local Coop Extra that were so soggy and discoloured that I can't imagine anyone buying them...

@FiXato @shadowwwind @fesshole UK? In the shops I go to there it's usually yellow stickers, ironically very similar to the security stickers on expensive products!

What I watch then is the discount. 10% off is not worth it, especially if the "meal deal" price is lower.

@severtz Norway. Usually it's 40%-50%, though some go up to 70% (though then the expiration date usually has passed several days).
