What Adobe is doing with the cancellation of Animate should be illegal. Animators are livid atm.
Unfortunately most foss tools aren't as good as Animate to replace it (no, Grease Pencil doesn't quite do the same and Krita/Synfig/Pencil2d/OpenToonz aren't as feature-rich), but Moho is an excellent piece of software. First created for the #BeOS back in 1999, I remember using it back then. In 2007 it even had a #Linux version.

@eugenialoli Adobe killed Freehand and Fontographer when acquired Macromedia, what can you expect from them?

@eugenialoli there's two new foss projects in development that are worth keeping an eye on, and maybe helping out with constructive feedback. I believe both are Alpha, so temper your expectations.
GitHub - GraphiteEditor/Graphite: Open source comprehensive 2D content creation tool suite for graphic design, digital art, and interactive real-time motion graphics — featuring node-based procedural editing

PixiEditor
PixiEditor is a free and open-source universal 2D graphics editor, powered by innovative Node Graph workflow. Create vectors, edit photos, design graphics, make pixel art and animate - all in one app!

Graphite just released standalone Lin/Mac/Win apps on discord(yuck) might just be a good time to check it out.
Good luck,

@AlexanderMars No, these have nothing to do with what animators need.

@eugenialoli I was an freelance Animator and a beta tester for Macromedia during Flash 4/5/MX, basically up until the Adobe acquisition. I am quite familiar with the medium, I changed careers after getting tired of looking at a CRT all day.
These are both open source projects, the users that get involved and give thoughtful, quality feedback will be the ones that get the tooling they want to do their jobs.

@eugenialoli yes and this Cartoon Brew is just one piece of coverage on it. https://www.cartoonbrew.com/tools/adobe-animate-software-sunset-258612.html

@eugenialoli Can you elaborate on "aren't as feature-rich", maybe just the big 3 items? Blender became what it is in its space because Blender Foundation built that tight feedback loop between users and developers though their Open Movie projects.
For most everything else I always only see "no, not complete enough" but rarely a wishlist that anybody could pick up and solve the problems.

@eugenialoli From what I heard, Adobe has rescinded that cancellation a few hours later after (allegedly) Disney sent them an angry email, as they are using Animate in quite a few of their movie workflows.

@WooShell indeed, but the damage is done. A lot of people are already moving to other solutions, mostly Moho.

@eugenialoli also consider the "wick editor", which is sort of like an Adobe Flash animation creator, but #OpenSource

@eugenialoli I haven't run into any bugs though, and it is available as an appimage
