@cstross but can you trace your ancestry back to the first people who walked into Scotland?
Alternatively: you're not really Scottish unless your whakapapa includes Neanderthals.

@cstross My (English) nan would throw a fit when my aunt (who has lived on Anglesey since the 1960s) called herself Welsh. I can't recall any of her Welsh friends complaining.

@cstross the poll is configured to allow multiple options to be selected, so I guess you exist in a superposition.

@cstross I lived in Scotland for only 9 years, but this included half my Primary and all my Secondary education, and both parents had Scottish ancestors, so I count myself as at least part Scottish.
Also I have a fèileadh-mòr. -

Same as above, except I can further claim I descended from a Scot named 'Bell' who emigrated to Virginia from Northern Ireland in the 17th century after 'The Removal' of the Borderers from their homes south of Glasgow.
So I'll claim I'm Scots-Irish and will abide by no poll saying differently.

@cstross you are scottish if you choose to be so. It is an association more than a birth right.

@jackwilliambell @cstross I can trace my mother's very common Scots-Irish last name back to 19th-century Ohio. It's personally hilarious, I went on a deep genealogy binge specifically to trace that branch of the family and it was the only one that came up empty. One branch went accurately back to the 9th century in Eastern Europe, but not the one I was looking for.
