In my favorite PKD novel , ‘The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch’, you could buy “Perky Pat” dolls and get a dollhouse with furniture and dishes and tiny working appliances like a real dishwasher. It’s all paraphernalia for an illegal drug that makes you think you are the doll, and you can live out an escapist life as the doll in your dollhouse. And there’s a new, stronger drug that’s coming that will even let you meet God

@flyingsaceur Also Wild Palms has this drug "Mimezine" that lets you BE in the holoscreen shows, sponsored by the Scientology expy. Except it also rots your brain and makes you see cathedrals everywhere. VR is a bad trip.

I just read _Now Wait for Last Year_, which I hadn't previously even heard of. Perhaps he didn't write that one on my original timeline. Or I just haven't taken enough JJ-180. Now I can't seem to get that anywhere. I hope it hasn't gone out of production. Since I've already used the last of mine, I can't even get a Biltong to make me some.

@mdhughes @flyingsaceur I think sometimes Wild Palms existed only in my imagination, nobody else seems to remember it, and it was quite a big deal at the time. I should track it down, it was probably quite prescient.

@alexanderdyas The part where "special police" just grab people off the street, and James Belushi's the only guy who notices/cares. 100% US 2026.

It's not generally cynical enough to be the present, but it tries.

@mdhughes I’m realising that when I say prescient I mean to acknowledge that what has already happened in the past will most likely happen again in the future.

Those who choose to ignore history…
