@atax1a I fucking hate this timeline. I'm going to lose/am losing friends over AI.

I generally have to keep my mouth shut b/c my opinions border on "mean", "personal attacks", "hard to defend", and yes, "selfish". But I just had an epiphany: using AI feels like a personal attack against things I personally care about that most people don't. It's frustrating to watch.

@atax1a I probably underestimated how much my peers were tolerating the things I find important versus actually understanding _why_ I might find them important.

@cr1901 yeah, that played a factor in one of our earlier friendship breakdowns: we concluded that we weren't actually friends, they just tolerated us because we shared a hobby that they'd introduced us to.

@atax1a (Hard learned lesson for me: Having the same hobby/interests is actually quite a bad metric as to whether you're gonna get along with someone/become friends.)

@cr1901 they were friends with each other, which misled us pretty thoroughly

@atax1a I remember a while ago reading that when the tech hype cycle has finally failed in its target audience, they pivot to trying to target women. nfts for her. and now llms as feminism

I guess I've been very lucky. I've only ever lost a few friendships other than by people moving away, other than by geographic separation (before the advent of cheap long distance calls, or the internet) or death.
I have one friend who has political views I find repellent, and it has definitely strained our friendship.

I mostly try to avoid discussion of politics with them. I already had some experience doing that with certain family members, where there was not any practical alternative.

Despite their being moderately right-wing, they aren't completely bat-shit crazy about it, like most of the right wing. They do believe there's an illegal immigration problem, but they find ICE as abhorrent as I do. Were that not the case, I probably could not remain friends with them. Tolerance of alternative viewpoints only can go so far. When someone is willing to deny basic human rights to a group they don't like, that supercedes any other common ground we might have had.
