    Leaving X.

German parties leaving, collectively, is more than a symbolic exit. It is a chance to reassess how and where political communication happens.

A platform’s relevance is not inherent. It is constructed through user behavior. And when influential users walk, the relevance begins to erode.

@claesdevreese Elon's thumb is so firmly on the scale when it comes to promoting the far right on X, the only meaningful way anyone to the left of Pinochet can really impact the discourse there to leave en masse in a very public way. Journalists, politicians, government bodies and media institutions that view themselves as apolitical need to follow suit as they lend undeserved credibility to a platform and people who would see them burm.

@claesdevreese One follow-on for newsrooms and fact-checkers is preserving traceability as political communication moves platforms: original quote, surrounding context, archived link, and what changed after migration. Otherwise the public record fragments faster than verification workflows can follow.

@claesdevreese The death of another right-wing platform beckons.

They all end like that, because the bargain is not fair or balanced: Right-wingers find their unity and identity signalling most potently through attacking left-wingers.

They don’t really agree on too much between themselves, so when the targets walk away there’s not much left to talk about, except maybe out-nazi each other, which just shifts the victims again.

@claesdevreese Perhaps the obvious Nazi rebrand of Twitter years ago was the moment to claim moral clarity? It's like someone saying 1945 was the moment they realized Nazis shouldn't be supported, once Anne Frank was murdered. Symbolic? The years since Ai Wei Wei art was censored by Elon Musk are the years of continued direct support of overt Nazism, boosting the Swastika. https://www.flyingpenguin.com/twitters-x-design-based-on-nazi-swastika/

Also cf: Myspace. Networks decay slowly, then hit a tipping point and collapse.
