@hypercritical I haven’t seen a blog post here in a while. I’m excited to check it out.

@hypercritical I wish you could have the Renault 5 in the US, it meets all of these criteria
,is incredibly fun to drive, and it looks like this

@DrChris @hypercritical and is a sensible size.

@hypercritical Nice article, largely agree. I have a 2016 Subaru Impreza RS and it scores well. I has a very large screen but I mostly use that for CarPlay. I wish the Honda Civic had a similar screen or I might have bought it.
While it has some features I didn't want I do enjoy them. But most changes since the 2019 model are welcom.
Steering wheel buttons are buttons and well done.
Physical buttons for temp, fan speed on screen is be biggest criticism. Would prefer a fan knob.

@Colman @hypercritical the thing is, in Ireland it is on the larger side for a hatchback - I wish it was a little smaller

@Colman @hypercritical this is our car compared to the original R5 from the 80’s

@DrChris @hypercritical it does fit in parking spaces though. It’s not that large for a modern hatchback.

️But yeah. Though the original Renault 5 was too small for my requirements currently.

@DrChris Look at those door handles!

@DrChris @hypercritical I guess we’re going to have to form the mastodon R5 owners club.

EV Stupidity Checklist: https://hypercritical.co/2026/05/29/ev-stupidity-checklist
@hypercritical I know it’s more about “not ruining cars just because they’re electric”, but putting the charging port in two opposed spot on the car (front and back).
Sidenote, I like how VW has it behind the emblem

@Colman @hypercritical are you interested in a baguette holder STL file? You’re on mastodon so I’m assuming the answer has to be yes.

https://www.printables.com/model/1735073-baguette-holder-for-r5It needs a bit of work - the attachment would be better as a spring mechanism

@hypercritical @siracusa 100% agree on *every* single point on this. Vehicle manufactures should hire @siracusa to preform a Siracusa Check of their upcoming design.

@DrChris @hypercritical amazingly not. I have enough pets that I don’t need one in the shape of a printer.

Anyway, the half-life of anything even resembling a baguette in a car with two teenage boys would be short.

@hypercritical The Tesla Robotaxi* has neither a rear window nor sideview mirrors. How does Tesla get away with this in the USA? Laws don’t apply to Elon.
* They’re using some Model 3s for robotaxis. I’m talking about the purpose-built vehicle.

@hypercritical my 2021 VW ID.3 scores 10/12. The two minus points are touch sensitive fan/heat controls, and touch sensitive steering wheel buttons. The 2026 Neo model fixes both of those and scores 12/12. It’s a great little car, and I’ll get the latest one whenever it’s time to replace mine.

@hypercritical I was so desperately hoping these were actual checkboxes when tapping them! Great post, though!

@hypercritical my beloved Mach E checks *most* of these boxes, but the doors still have silly electric buttons on the outside instead of real handles, and still uses the touch screen for HVAC.

@hypercritical the Polestar 4 fails so many more than the last one, but that's the one that annoys me least (and I'm generally happy with the car, but I'd definitely go with most of this checklist for next car.)

@hypercritical but also... they're coming out with the P4 Wagon soon, and I suspect that would tick off most of the exterior annoyances (including handles, rear mirror & window)
