Stop trying to make simple things sound complex – either because you like hearing the sound of your own voice or because of whatever insecurities drive you. If I’m kicking a puppy in the street, it’s because I’m an asshole. You don’t need to know my motivations. You just need to know I’m an asshole. And stop me.

@aral I vehemently disagree on this. Choosing the "just an asshole" argument is a protection mechanism humans have to make things feel easier than they are and create a false feeling of safety. We get to go "they are a different kind of human" allowing us to feel both superior and safe.
All humans are capable of heinous things. Understanding why allows us to change & prevent that behaviour. -

@aral I would 100% stop you but dismissing all of the many complicated psychological and social issues around it is ridiculous.
I stop you now. Great, you fuck off and find another unless the root cause is dealt with.It just isn't that simple.

@alexisbushnell Good. You’ve saved the puppy’s life.
Now make sure I can’t do that to another puppy ever again. And then you have all the time in the world to figure out what went wrong with me and prevent it from happening again.
(Yes, this is about Israel.)

Yes, this is about Israel.
I used the example of the puppy getting kicked as I’m painfully aware that, at least for some people, the thought of a puppy in distress is unbearable whereas tens of thousands of murdered Brown kids is just another Wednesday. (You’d have a hard time getting a politician who regularly kicks puppies to death elected but folks who consider themselves otherwise decent have not, so far at least, had an issue with voting for people who fund and arm Israel’s ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people.)

There was never a decades-long propaganda campaign to demonise all puppies.

@aral A conscience that awakens for an animal but sleeps on the genocide of a people... is not a conscience, but rather a pathetic selectivity

@aral @alexisbushnell This is painfully clear : the urgency isn't about knowing the reasons, but to end the genocide.
I might steal this analogy in the future, thanks!

@aral
Reminds me of Hillary Clinton discrediting young protestors against the Palestinian genocide because they allegedly couldn’t identify the bodies of water referred to in “from the river to the sea”, as if that in any way invalidated their moral argument. -

@aral Everything is both simple and complex. The difference is all in the observer. Two people can observe the same thing, and see different "simple" explanations, or complex ones, or even both. Framing is everything, and is a product of what you care about.
The question here is whether your analogy is relevant. Kicking puppies is either pure sadism, or anger expressed without empathy. That is only a small aspect of what is happening in Palestine.
How should "we" respond to this "kicking of puppies"? Put the puppy in a shelter? Or in a new home? Put the perp in jail? Give them a fine and community service? Who are "we"? The "international community"? The U.N.?
The wider the frame, the more inappropriate the analogy becomes.
