      (and like, if I grow a plant and not kill it within weeks, I count that as a win generally xD )

        @cmconseils strawberries in a balcony box are a freaking good starting point. And so much yummier than bought ones!

          @cmconseils @IcooIey Cat shelter lady (where I volunteer) was showing me where her vegetable garden and hothouse were that she no longer has time for. For a quick second I considered offering to restart them, then thought noooo, what are you thinking. 😅

            @cmconseils I don’t think these two are necessarily in contradiction to each other.

            Let’s say you own (and can defend) your home, and the land it stands on. You’re able to reliably grow enough food to feed both you and your loved ones. Then solar/wind your way to be net positive on energy.

            Your daily life would no longer be dependent on that society/state that (intentionally) keeps you overwhelmed in order to subdue you.

                    @cmconseils I don't think growing food from scratch is so hard. I've seen some growing outside with zero maintenance, on trees and bushes.

                      @jordgubben @cmconseils

                      You really don't need to grow everything you eat. Think of it as supplementing. Even a small herb pot or garden can reduce grocery costs.
                      Gardening, however, can grow on you. It is a wonderful hobby. Don't forget about foraging either - there is a lot of free food that can be found almost everywhere plants grow.

                          @cmconseils Yep. Any time I'm faced with a task that makes my heart start pounding for no good reason I start inventing pretty much any other activity I could be doing. The more unreachable the better. If I could actually do it, like right now, that would be totally missing the point. It's got to be something that if I start thinking about actually doing it I suddenly start getting overwhelmed. So like I have to go to the store and get dirt. What kind of dirt? I need tools. Ughh....

                                @oddtail @cmconseils try strawberries. A window sill box is enough. And they're so much tastier than bought ones. (Also: very drought resistant).

                                And if you want to make sure you don't forget watering them, a beer bottle filled with water (or something similar) top down to the bottom of the box eliminates the need to water for a few weeks ☺️

                                    @cmconseils Exactly what I am doing, this was my work yesterday on my irrigation system! I spent over $10,000 getting this garden built and I have moved almost 2,000 cubic yards of dirt, rock, soil and mulch. https://youtu.be/n-d_ag8hEL0?si=v-PYWy9gEbltPBra

                                      I just cut some brush, mowed a spot, put sand down and planted stuff. My equipment consists of a round point shovel, a hoe and a 5-tine fork to spread mulch. I used to haul sand in my truck but now use a small tractor. I don't plow, till or hardly weed. I get old hay from farmers and use manure from my chickens.

                                        You don't have to grow all of it. And rather than growing it, you can **make** it. I don't buy bread, I buy flour and yeast. And lately I've been growing my own yeast.

                                          @cmconseils I resemble that remark!😹
                                          I'm trying to get my house less chaotic & messy & preparing it for my future hip surgery... but also thinking I should use the back yard as a garden for vegetables & herbs. Maybe next year.
