    Quietly in the night, you are handed the Tree Ray. It does one thing and only one thing, and that is turning people into trees. Anyone at all you fire it at? Instantly a tree. A nice, healthy, lush tree with a sturdy root system, multiple symbiotic species in, on and around it, just doing its tree best. Probably attracting a bunch of birds, too.

    ...How careful are you to tree people up?

    @sinituulia This sounds nice, but the problem as always is why should I have the ultimate say in radically changing someone’s life/ ending their existence as known? Individuals playing god never ends well, no matter how well intentioned. We seem to do better with groups coming to consensus, though that doesn’t always work either. Maybe something like a treeth and reconciliation council? We do need ethical ways of holding evil accountable.

      @sinituulia@eldritch.cafe Where's the option for "Starts off with 'never use it' but then uses it once which starts a slow cascade of internal moral decay which eventually gets me 'war criminal' status" ?

        @IcooIey A council would probably be all well and good, yes... It doesn't seem like the holding accountable bit is currently working, though

          "Hey, what's up, Sini?"

          Oh, nothing. Just watching some Last Week Tonight and daydreaming about turning a bunch of people into trees 🫠

            @jmelesky I'm in a slightly dark mood probably but that did get a delighted cackle out of me. Ah, it's probably good I don't have any real power, or a Tree Ray.

              @sinituulia shortcircuiting the ethical quandary here by immediately becoming a tree

                @sinituulia
                I'm not gonna go look for it now, but I have seen a video go around, a Captain Planet spoof where he has a pelvic-thrust ray that Trees people.

                I'd be unstoppable.

                      @afewbugs I figure as long as it would be completely clear who you're locked on, even remotely would work?

                        @sinituulia it never does for long, it’s an arms race against interests always trying to gain more for themselves, avoid accountability. But we have to trying.

                            @hache Someone posted GIFs of it, and I'd not even remembered I'd seen it, and it only then came back to me. But yeah, there's a couple of GIFs somewhere in this thread
