          @nixCraft I still find it amusing that "breaking free from Google" requires getting Pixel phone… from Google (as only supported device) 🤭

                @wojtek @nixCraft they work with a mysterious new provider that will provide their required hardware security.

                so will happen soon.

                      @nixCraft
                      Except that it only runs on Google firmware, so not really free.

                        @nixCraft@mastodon.social The irony of breaking free from Google by needing to use Google hardware. 😜

                          @nixCraft Just got a Pixel 10 Pro XL, with Graphene and using Cape for mobile network.
                          Good enough for me at the moment. 👾

                            @ferricoxide @nixCraft It's the only option apart from their secret OEM partnership that meets the requirements (mainly secure element lockouts and custom AVB keys)

                              @nixCraft GrapheneOS is less about breaking free and more about setting up a very heavy security focus. Its limitations like only supporting recent Pixel devices are important to bear in mind and make it not really a good default just for anyone trying to get free of Google's control. Kind of like how I wouldn't suggest Arch linux for someone just trying to get off of Windows.

                              LineageOS (and some of the simpler ones based on it like /e/os) might make more sense to push as the "break free" OS. Though one should always remember that all of these are still Android, based on AOSP with various limitations (but at least Google free and open so we have control over our own devices, not a corporation.)
