    @NetscapeNavigator
Who wrote the code? I understand SCOTUS says AI work cannot be copyrighted!.
However, if AI is fully embedded, nothing I do on the machine is copyrighted either?
(I am tech incompetent, but use linux now after trying and failing 15yrs sgo)

@SometimesLovely @NetscapeNavigator anything generated directly by AI is public domain. But! If you use a vibe coded program to create something like an image or script or 3d model, you still own that output (for the same reason Google doesn't own your essays written in Google Docs).

If you use AI to generate text or images for you in a work, you don't own those outputs, but you can still piece it together into a composite that includes your own work, in order to create something that you overall own (for instance, using an AI generated intro to a pamphlet you wrote. You still own the pamphlet, but the intro is public domain).

Windows 12 is due to come out this year.

      1) Your computer does not meet the system requirements. Again.

      Why?

Your PC will need a dedicated NPU — a specialized processor designed to handle AI tasks. So, if you recently bought a new PC just to use Windows 11, Microsoft wants you to go shopping again.

      2) It will finally, unfortunately, introduce a subscription model.

That's right — you read that correctly. They want you to pay and keep paying to use the computer you just bought. Technically, you won’t own your computer while Windows is installed.

NOW is the time to try Linux. Stop waiting. Don’t make excuses. Don’t even complain — we all knew this day was coming. Either try Linux, or admit you’re Microsoft’s little bitch.

      Source? Yes, this is real.

I don't have a dog in this race (longtime Linux user, and I've given up being a tech journo) but this report felt off to me.

WindowsCentral did a bit of extra source chasing and reckons it's overblown to say the least

No, an AI-focused "Windows 12" is not coming this year — here's the plan

A new report has caught the internet's attention, claiming that Windows 12 is coming this year and will be a modular, AI-powered OS. Here's why that's wrong.

@NetscapeNavigator Will Windows 12 be the final nail that makes my employer allow me to run Linux on my company notebook? This would be awesome!

@taschenorakel @NetscapeNavigator As awesome as that would be, the LTS support for Windows 11 will run at least until 2034. I don't see many companies switching before that date. Especially not to an entirely new tech stack. Sad, but unfortunately the reality. But we can remain hopeful that this latest desperate push alienates even more people and makes them switch.

Saying "it will introduce a subscription model" gave me the wrong idea, there will likely be a subscription option to tie in office 365 with AI features

            "
references to a subscription model were found in the latest Windows preview builds, suggesting that Microsoft is finally going to force users to pay a monthly subscription to use Windows, right? No. These references are almost definitely tied to the newly discovered "IoT Enterprise Subscription" edition of Windows 11, not the client version of Windows vNext.
            "[1]

            "
The classic Home Windows is likely to remain a one-time licence. Advanced AI services would be added as an option.

while the AI stuff is total 💩
i want to discourage the idea that people shouldn’t pay the ones who regularly and long term take care for updates and instead use Linux because then they don’t have to pay.

it’s actually logical that continuous support and regular security updates cannot be made up for with a one time payment.

So yes i absolutely prefer people use Linux but there is a moral obligation to support the people developing your software financially as you can.

@lazyb0y @NetscapeNavigator Yep. For a long time I bought my #Debian install CDs as a way of contributing to the project.

Now I'm wondering if #SPI want to run a "voluntary subscription" programme for #FOSS users. Maybe tie it in with things like Debian's popcon to redistribute funds to commonly installed software.

yeah maybe this - but also helping with testing, translation, or at least reporting a bug properly when found, instead of going to free mailinglists and requesting volumteers to immediately take care of ones very important problem are also options 😉

@NetscapeNavigator Microsoft continues in their assertion that your computer is actually their computer.

And the bright sides are what, being able to not install stuff you don't want like you already can in some OS's, and some pretty bits in the UI? I look forward to Microslop's burning crater.

(For the benefit of any twerp trying to claim this toot is some sort of threat: I'm referring to the idea of MS crashing and burning after making a particularly awful business decision)

Reminder that PopCon is the only source of package installation data, but also universally rejected by anyone who cares about the security of their systems. As a result it vastly overrepresents single laptop users who have just installed Debian.

How long until Windows 11 itself is forced out of support? I can see most people unwilling to upgrade if it means having to rent their own computers, and Microsoft forcing their hand anyways by removing security updates from Windows 11

Saying "it will introduce a subscription model" gave me the wrong idea, there will likely be a subscription option to tie in office 365 with AI features

references to a subscription model were found in the latest Windows preview builds, suggesting that Microsoft is finally going to force users to pay a monthly subscription to use Windows, right? No. These references are almost definitely tied to the newly discovered "IoT Enterprise Subscription" edition of Windows 11, not the client version of Windows vNext.

The classic Home Windows is likely to remain a one-time licence. Advanced AI services would be added as an option.

@ambiguous_yelp Not sure if this will be the case, #MacroSlop is deeply in debt and needs a way to capture money, and for sure companies would need to pay, or do what Europe is already doing, moving away from #MicroSlop
