EVERETT, #Washington — The City of #Everett has shut down its entire network of [68] #Flock license plate reader cameras after a Snohomish County judge ruled the footage those cameras collect qualifies as a public record.

The decision came after a Washington man filed public records requests seeking access to data captured by the cameras.
    ...
Franklin said if lawmakers pass legislation allowing cities to shield Flock data from public disclosure, Everett would consider turning the cameras back on. She said the city is not dismantling or removing the cameras in the meantime.

“Should we get a fix in Olympia that allows us to protect the data from public disclosure, then we can make the decision to turn them back on,” Franklin said.

@alice lets just say (for legal reasons [!]) that whilst I can't endorse someone doing a CamOver, I'm also neither condemning nor rewarding such acts of resistance against the Palantir-led "Pre-Crime" dystopia!

@alice honestly the thing that really upsets me is, *the fuckers want to turn them on again when the public can't demand disclosure.*

sure would suck for Flock if they had to replace a Scott Adams's Number worth of hardware they never should've deployed in the first fucking place.

@matildalove clarification: "i don't know, samus?", the joke being "fuck if I know who said this first, so I'm attributing a fictional lesbian icon."

edit: and in the event you are unaware of who Samus Aran is, that full name should find plenty of reference material.

@alice “Protect” the data they shouldn’t be gathering in the first place. Hell no! I’ll encourage my state reps to ban them outright PR require all their data be public like DOT traffic cams.
