π€― Last year a #Meta Lobbyist became a new head of the #Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC). Today, the former head of the DPC announced that she is now working for MHC - the Irish law firm for Meta that was previously defending Meta before the #DPC in #GPDR cases - basically a 360Β° seat swap between the Irish regulator and Meta. This is not just extreme #CorporateCapture of a regulator and makes #Ireland a laughing stock within the EU, but moves like this also undermine any public...
@maxschrems She fell for 'double'.

@maxschrems why do you think this will make ireland the laughing stock of the EU? The EU does very well by itself thank you very much:
https://euobserver.com/204496/ngos-want-ex-meta-mep-removed-from-eu-digital-rules-relaxation/@dejaeghere @maxschrems She was elected by the citizens of Finland. Anybody voting for an EPP party is a laughing stock to me personally, but there's only one country in the EU which renders all economic stats in the EU useless to the point that we have to exclude it from calculations. It does so because it serves its American corporate masters, so yeah, we point and laugh at it.

@maxschrems
I remain convinced that with political will there are imaginative and effective ways to clamp down on this revolving door regulatory capture.

@maxschrems I read the picture first and thought it was satire post over extreme corporate blandness, using comletely generic campany names. Apparently it wasn't.
Looking up from the pub filled streets of Irish Disneyland, Dublin we can see the towers where plenty of this cringeworthy neoliberal culture exists.

EU citizens: the USA is your cautionary tale!Don't let this sort of revolving door between regulators and lobbyists continue to be legal!
Don't let the military/industrial complex eat your governments!
Act now to save your democratic institutions!

@Max Schrems Ireland is poor, their economy isn't well since many years - they need the money from Big Tech. For that reason they've been extremely unresponsive to data privacy issues from the beginning on. I don't see any way to change that, the EU itself gets weaker and weaker regarding enforcing these issues. Most existing lies with some activists and as many as possible private parties writing eregular emails to EU commisions about this, emphasizing the need for privacy. On a political level there seems only apathy now. -

@maxschrems Why should such people feel ashamed? Did you ever watch the comedy TV series Parlement? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parlement_(TV_series)
I often found myself unable to laugh because these unscrupulous lobbyists were so authentic.

@maxschrems Itβs close to being the same situation in England. I wonder how many more places it might be. EU is not immune to corporate capture and people need to start waking up realising that our protections and rights are being chipped away at.
-
@maxschrems You are confusing cause and effect. The DPC is not maliciously sabotaging GDPR because it made a bad hire. It made that hire because the Irish government's economic policy is to appeal to multinationals so they headquarter there, and sabotaging GDPR is a means to that end.
@fazalmajid @maxschrems Like in the UK now; the Labour gov has even stated explicitly that the role of regulators is to promote 'growth', hence hiring a Meta honcho to run the Competition & Markets Authority β¦

@traecer @maxschrems Too late for the UK, where lobbyists are hired to write gov policy on AI and defence, etc., regulators don't regulate, and non-corporate interests are excluded from discussions on public safety. Private Eye has had regular items on revolving doors, regulatory capture, and conflict of interest, for decades.
