I’ve been given the opportunity to work with a special needs kid one-on-one and I’m teaching him #BlackHistory through claywork. Last week we discussed the history behind Southern face jugs—who invented the form, what they signify and their probable roots in the Congo. This week, I brought him a jug so he could sculpt the face. This child who supposedly has attention & behavior problems focused on the project peacefully for two hours solid. #Clay is the way.

@PhoenixSerenity I think you’ll also enjoy the fact that our “classroom” is a community garden.

@potterybyosa Hmmm. ADHD manifests as both hyperfocusing and difficulty focusing, both extremes. If he hasn't been assessed for ADHD, it's something to consider. A diagnosis would entitle him to more educational support and accommodations. I wish I'd been diagnosed many decades earlier, when it could have had that kind of impact.

People don't have problems. They just need the right medium. The 1 size fit all education is clearly a failure from an old age.

And on top of that, the result is PHENOMENAL

@cczona He was diagnosed and heavily medicated. He’s currently being weened off his meds now that he is in a nurturing alternative learning environment that is working for him. There’s an added layer of complication for Black children when it comes to these diagnoses and behavior labeling.

@potterybyosa yeah, I'm familiar a little bit with the racial/racist dimension. I hope he gets more appropriate support and treatment. There are non-drug modalities, for instance. I'm still learning what's possible for myself.

one-on-one (with a good mentor) solves many problems -- because one size rarely fits all -- it just forces many of us into a box that doesn't fit.

Good for you for giving back in this way!

@potterybyosa wonderful to see. I'm part if a 60 strong artisan coop and most of us are neurodivergent in some way. "Bad behaviour" only manifests when creativity is stifled 🥰
