Rouge was where you got eaten by a Grue?@realn2s No, that was Collosal Cave, a text adventure.

People who say rogue-like...who've never dealt with an angry expat construction worker who grew up in the Troubles, who is now interacting with the arsehole at the end of the bar with their foot applied to a chest as they expel the aforesaid arsehole through the bar door at high speed...don't understand what rogue-llke is.
Oh, did you mention a video game?

@GeePawHill I have a very strong aversion to any game labelled rogue-like because I played Rogue (or similar ASCII dungeon crawler) on our family xt as a kid.
I was playing kings quest and some early epic / shareware platformers in parallel and could not get into the idea the game was absent narrative, unrelentingly difficult and you just kept going till you died.
There's an obvious parallel here to my childhood understanding of how human life is supposed to work that I don't want to interrogate too closely here.

@GeePawHill Whew, I'm safe from your opprobrium whenever I do happen to say "rogue-like", which I'll have to do more often now.
Played mostly on a vax 11/730 running 4.2BSD. I played Hack as well, but I found I enjoyed rogue more: hack was slower to play, and I liked playing rogue in what I called "plunge mode", where I just tried to go as deeply in the dungeon as possible as quickly as possible. This is not a great winning strategy, but at least for me it made a quick, enjoyable game.

@GeePawHill I never got far in Rogue, but I got really into Angband for a while. On my best run I made it to around level 80 (so close, yet so far away to Morgoth on level 100)

@GeePawHill As long as people are throwing out true rogue-like games, I’ll share my old-school favorite: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moria_(1983_video_game). Many, many hours played.

Hah! I remember playing Rogue, on my Atari 1040, using the TV as screen.
Was there ever a limit of levels to go down?

@GeePawHill I've played Nethack but not rogue specifically.

@Firlefanz I have a memory of there being 60, but that was so long ago, I doubt myself.

Wow. I think I got down to maybe 12 or 13.
