Profits, power, "our own safety," either party is happy to lock down society under some ideolical premise or another. Please let people know about this: Ya$h$oo email is locking down accounts for the purpose of extorting money and extracting personal data from subscribers. Trouble is they will not tell you what the charges are until you allow a 3rd party (I N T E L $L I $ C H E C K) to take over your phone and take pics of your driver's license, passport, birth certificate or other supporting documents to get it back. 25 years of my life is stolen!

@art @taylorlorenz these laws and proposals are not just an american thing (as the article points), the article focus mostly on anglophone and USA, but these is far from being something exclusive from those countries, it's however extremely American to frame it from the American perspective as you did and as the article does a bit less than you.

The article is correct that its the right wing who's initially proposing this all over the world.

@taylorlorenz You are exactly right. This is a survalence system that will be used against people with beliefs that differ from the party beliefs. Suddenly people with different beliefs get labeled as anti-American, or even "religious terrorist", next comes de-banking, and the digital version of an arm band or public registry. Then come the personal attacks, moltov cocktails landing on your roof, garage door or front porch, and finally comes the work camps and the gas chambers!

@taylorlorenz Age verification laws are a step in the direction of governments banning individuals from using computers, i.e., effectively licensing computer use.

The core of the right wing is the conviction that behavior must be controlled, that the exercise of rights must be constricted, not protected and expanded.

When age checks fail, some legislators will begin thinking about requiring logins to be vetted against national registries "proving" age.

@taylorlorenz isn't the age verification actually a problem for corporations? They don't want it. What if you are played into movement that favours corporations? It happened before. People protected Uber in name of local workers and freedom.
