@pmonks @ai6yr I used to live in Kyburz on Highway 50 and every snowy day going over the hill to SLT I'd see these idiots absolutely careening up the hill in their 4WD SUV or brodozer, and basically every time I'd see some jackwad doing that I'd find them stuffed into a snowbank a couple miles up the road. So long as they were out of their car yelling into a cellphone I'd just honk and keep on clanking up the hill in my tire chains.

When I lived in Tahoe the silver Subaru wagon was so common that my wife once unlocked and got into one and only when she was about to start the car did she realize it was someone else's silver Subaru wagon. Good cars for the area.

@me @pmonks @ai6yr I have the same story. I was visiting my kids in Portland, Oregon. My wife and I drove to one of our favorite local restaurants in our rental Subaru to pick up dinner. She dropped me off to go in while she looked for parking. When I came out, my wife was not in the car. Weird. I got in, wondering where she went, pizza boxes on my lap. The car was messy, too. What had she done? Then I looked up, across the street, and she was sitting in our rental Subaru, laughing so hard that she was crying. I don't know whose Subaru that was.

I've heard stories that in previous decades, when Subarus used less key variations, people would get in, and start, and drive off in other people's Subarus, in Portland, Oregon.

@pmonks @me @ai6yr If I owned a local tow company, I'd consider setting up a roadside chain rental service. "Cheaper than what I'd charge to tow you!" For an extra fee, put the chains on for you. For another extra fee, remove the chains on the way back. Deposit enough to cover replacing chains in case they "forget" to return them.

@sbourne @pmonks @ai6yr oh, they've had chain monkeys for decades. My brother did a stint as one. Insanely hard work. Basically, if you have chains then you pay to get them installed, if you don't then they sell you some and charge you for installation. At least when I was living there, it was this weird half-regulated, half wild-west type of operation. I stayed out of their way.
