    Normal behavior, right? Kansas Sends Letters To Trans People Demanding the Immediate Surrender of Drivers Licenses 🤨
    https://www.erininthemorning.com/p/kansas-sends-letters-to-trans-people

    "The legislature did not include a grace period."

    Normal in authoritarian, #Christofascist states, countries, legislatures. 🔨

    #transgenocide 🇺🇲 Kansas Orders Trans Drivers to Surrender Licenses With One Day’s Notice
    https://www.them.us/story/kansas-orders-trans-drivers-surrender-licenses-one-days-notice

    Trans people affected are required to replace their state identification at their own expense.

        @persagen

        Horrible news. 😡

        While I have researched and presented on #DriversLicenses, I ended up focusing my masters degree on #BirthCertificates as--at least in Canadian provinces and territories--they are the foundational #IdentificationDocument from which all other #ID is based upon. (Some exceptions: citizenship cards for immigrants, etc). What is true for a birth certificate as ID is true for all ID arising from it, including #DriversLicences.

        The example you posted is why I believe that contemporary identification documentation is the 'root of all evil' for #trans people (or at least responsible for a great deal of it).

        Identification systems allow for #discrimination and #prejudice at a distance, and authorities always retain the right to change/retract/cancel without warning. Alas, this aspect is not unique to trans people, as both contemporary and historical actions have shown clearly how ID can suddenly construct the individual as beyond the (newly-established) pale.

        @likelyjanlukas Thank you for your work/comments 🙏

        I've long asserted no government/other ID needs sex/gender markers of any type

        I conferred w. N.S. Dept. Vital Statistics prior to sending them my affidavit of GCS (SRS/GRS): .c. change

        I equate that letter/doc equiv. to one of my 3 framed university degrees.

        I claimed ownership of it prior to submitting; challenged/had original returned when they sent me a photocopy (leaving original - MY property - to sit in a file cabinet in Halifax). grr

            @likelyjanlukas @persagen Mistakes are made on birth certificates. My father was one of 11 kids, with a unique spelling of the family name. The family was too poor to have it fixed and as an adult, he decided he preferred the spelling.

            A little boy in the US, born the boy he is, was mistakenly identified as a girl on his birth certificate. He now can’t play boys sports and it’s a mess.

            There needs to be acknowledgement that birth certificates make mistakes.

              @likelyjanlukas @persagen And there is a population in which babies seem to be girls, but when puberty hits, surprise, boy. And what about misidentified intersex babies?

              This doesn’t directly affect me and it makes me furious.

                    I don't blame you for being furious. IMO, this type of thing *does* affect everyone precisely because there continues to be a willingness to affect *anyone*.

                    Whatever contortions of thought brought those lawmakers to pull this stunt are just as arbitrarily applied to the next group of people they don't like. Whether they will do so, I can't say, but they've now proven they can and will in at least one instance, which opens the door for any other possible instance. 😡

                      @likelyjanlukas @persagen Well, a fact is that these bills make it dangerous for all women as a base. And when horrible people in power see one group do this & get away with this, it emboldens others to emulate them. And today you can drive, tomorrow you can’t? So much empathy for people who have to fight these nonsensical battles while the politicians who enact them remain impotent with regards to creating laws that actually help people. & every birth certificate should be able to be corrected.

                        Generally I concur except that this is not a risk limited solely to women. History (and now, present-day) is full of examples of people's identification documentation (of whatever sort) being revoked/invalidated/repurposed … and things never seem to go very well thereafter for the targets of such changes. ☹️

                        My area of lived knowledge, public advocacy, and academic investigation is with regards to trans people. Yet people have also experienced such discrimination through identification documentation based on race, religion, culture, indigineity, language, and so forth.

                        And while driving a vehicle is a legal privilege (vs a fundamental human right), an authority willing to revoke permissions for driving with no meaningful rationale* is one also capable of using identification documents to discriminate at even more fundamental levels.

                        *eg: revoking drivers licenses from individual drunk drivers would be a meaningful rationale

                        ☹️

                          @likelyjanlukas @persagen The risk to women is being perceived to be feminine enough you use a bathroom. Women have already been assaulted by perv bathroom police. Targeting trans people makes everyone unsafe.

                          This driver’s licence thing is just another level. Are they going to be putting out BOLOs on cars registered to trans folk, pulling over people at random, as ICE is currently doing?

                          They are creating fear, danger, division, a dangerous society for all.

                            PS: I concur that birth certificates should be able to be amended easily in any given jurisdiction.

                            Yet it is also important to recognise that birth certificates have nothing to do with certifying a birth: they are certified *extracts* from the larger record of birth (that includes things such as birth weight, gestational age, time of birth, etc etc etc).

                            I am unaware of jurisdictions that will amend the actual birth record (and such details are more the purvue of public health researchers). The amendments apply only to the birth certificate. When amending the certificate, the record of birth has additional 'events' attached. This means that the full record of birth still contains any errors or misassignments/misspellings/etc made at the time, but any future certified extracts (aka 'the birth certificate') will show only the amended version, not the original record.
