@michal @infobeautiful our (German) school is like that.
Often it takes me 5 minutes to get past the cars with my kid - we're on bikes. Just because the other people are too stupid for basic rules and too lazy to walk or ride a bike for that 500m school commute.

@michal @infobeautiful it's the region I'd say. We're on the edge of Berlin, it's a bit more small town/village vibe here.

Schools in the city centre are completely different.

In my school time more than 20 years ago, everyone just got there on foot or bike. Getting dropped off by car was super rare, if it ever happened.

@infobeautiful Where's the part where the bike lane becomes the parking zone?

@hannsr @michal @infobeautiful yeah, it's crazy. kids simply do not walk to school in the US anymore. if the school is 100 meters away a parent will walk the kid to school, any further and it's a ride.

what's not shown is how many of these cars are the size of school busses with one parent and one kid in it. also what's not shown are school busses because that would require the school have a budget and that's something with which americans will not put.

@infobeautiful Where is everyone just trying to get through traffic and not stopping at the school?

@keithpjolley @michal @infobeautiful when I was in higher grades (like middle school I guess) we were living in a small village and my school was about 20km away. We just took the school bus, everyone did, and it wasn't an issue.

I think it used to be like that in the US as well?

And yeah, cars are getting bigger and bigger here as well. We're not at the size of American "SUV" yet, because our streets are way narrower in general, but still.

When the wheels of the car are as big as the kid is tall, it's clearly too big 🙃

@hannsr @michal @infobeautiful As an example, as an American, distance from my house to the middle school is just under 10K. The primary school is closer at about 1.8K, and the high school is somewhere between those two.
Granted, many kids bus, I’ve never understood the people who pickup every day instead of having the kids bus.

@infobeautiful I work across from a school and I can confirm this is pretty accurate. What makes it worse is that the school is up a road which is *technically* wide enough for two cars, but is always parked up enough that only one can ever get through. Absolute scenes.

@michal @infobeautiful the diagram above could be modelled after the UK situation too I'm afraid 😞
