The idea of a white Upper Midwest had to be forced into existence
The people who tried to record the folk music of the Upper Midwest in the 1930s for the Library of Congress never publicly released the records because they were in 30 languages and didn’t fit the ideal of a “melting pot” of white American assimilation

The “melting pot” was supposed to turn everybody it could whiteIt took a modern crew of grad students to translate all those recordings, some collected by Alan Lomax, but the others by two women we somehow hear less about
Sidney Robertson and Helene Stratman-ThomasThey share the real picture of what a lot of American folk (ie country music) really sounded like back then

@sarahtaber
Worth checking out the fab (and somehow kind of affordable for its hugeness)
Folksongs of Another America: Field Recordings from the Upper MidwestWrangled at last for the University of Wisconsin Press by James P Leary and all those grad students
Request it at your local library, it’s out in paperback, but you can still get the Grammy-winning hardback with 5 CDs from Dust to Digital for $35!

#ICE #MAGAAlso shoulda content warning’ed #USpol but it’s coming to get us all
And this might fall under #NonAccordionContent except there’s that one pic of a guy with a #accordion and the Lomax recordings have at least one 🪗 in there because he hadn’t developed his pathological hatred of the squeezebox yet
Later he called it a “pestiferous instrument”

@AdrianRiskin @sarahtaber
I was wondering that when I saw that the book which came with all the CDs was out in paperbackThey were recorded for the Library of Congress, so not knowing any better. I would guess they might be available there
Oh! I just realized that the $35 Dust to Digital version is all digital now
So it’s a PDF of the big book and all the tracks as a digital download
So there you go for the tunes:

And you can get the big 400+ pg paperback from the University of Wisconsin for another $25Folksongs of Another America
Field Recordings from the Upper Midwest, 1937–1946
https://uwpress.wisc.edu/Books/F/Folksongs-of-Another-America(I’m confused about their $60 ebook price, but ebooks are a total rip off for libraries so this might be that)

Thanks for the lead - I'm now a couple hundred poorer and eagerly anticipating the arrival of 13(!) CDs of historic recordings from around the world from Dust to Digital.Unfortunately, you can no longer get the physical CD version of "Another America" from them anymore, just a paperback book and digital file with all the music. Though I did find a used copy on Discogs, where I'm now also a member and expect to lose even more money (but gain in musical delight).
