@alice @chargen Bicycle repair racing - instead of one super nice bike you ride the whole time, you get a series of dodgy garage sale bikes that are all broken in some way. Put your first bike in a repair stand, get it rideable, ride 20 km, then repair the next bike for the next set of laps...

@dragonfrog @alice @chargen What I especially love about this idea is that at the end of the race you have a bunch of repaired bicycles that can be donated to people who could use them

@alice @chargen Cat herding. It will be simultaneously the most adorable and frustrating of the Olympic sports.

Alternatively: skiing, but with dogs like the other day. :3

I would lovr to see husky drawn sled racing at the winter olympics. The only concern I have is for the potential of mistreatment of the animals.

You get to design a new competitive Olympic event, and all the official folx and media have to treat it like any other time-honored tradition. What is it?

I re-invent the high-dive, only it's sideways, out of a giant slingshot, into a huge vertical wall of Jello. Competitors get graded on style, technique, depth, and flavor choice.

@ben sounds about as much fun to watch as Olympic curling.

Unless you're talking about the other kind of sleeping those athletes are known for...which would make for a much more exciting event (for the 18+ athletes only, of course).

@autolycos @alice @chargen oh I like that! So many potential combinations of endurance race + target sport!

                  - Bowling without a ball return machine - you have to run to the back of the alley and retrieve your ball each time

                  - Rock climbing with stops as you ascend where you have to fold paper airplanes and fly them until you get one through a window

                  - Golf but they don't count strokes, you're just on the clock, and you have to run the course with your bag of clubs

@alice @chargen grocery store time trials.
All athletes get a list of 10 items they have to take from the shelves and the first to place them all, intact, on the checkout counter wins.
Start is at the automatic door, and they are not allowed a shopping cart.
And it's a real functioning store, with pedestrian traffic and such.
Test of speed, orienteering, dexterity, strength, balance, itemsrange from apple to large bag of catfood.

3 attempts for each, list changes, shortest combined time wins.

@theorangetheme @alice Since I was at work that day the Olympic games were actually on in my vicinity for once, and that moment with the dog was the only time I actually paid any attention to it! I'd be down for some cat herding too.

@jamey @dragonfrog @alice @chargen You cannot do that! Those are high performance bike shaped objects,

(and the Olympic games would then actually give back to the communities, we cannot have that, can we?)

@alice @chargen Alpine Prairiedogging - the athletes burrow into snow at the start and tunnel to the finish line over a winding course. They’re allowed to pop up to orient, but the competitors can pelt them with snowballs.

(This is essentially what my kid’s swim team used to do to cool off between races.)

@TheBreadmonkey oof, they'd need a therapy event afterwards for the athletes in the first event.

                                          @chargen okay, here goes...

You get to design a new competitive Olympic event, and all the official folx and media have to treat it like any other time-honored tradition. What is it?

This sounds like a good exercise for word weavers.
