    A new technology from #NASA #JPL enables #Perseverance to figure out its whereabouts without calling humans for help.

    Dubbed Mars Global Localization, it features an algorithm that compares panoramic images from the rover’s navigation cameras with onboard orbital terrain maps, and runs on the CPU originally used by Perseverance to communicate with #Ingenuity. Calc's a fix in 2min with 25cm accuracy.

      So, this may have something to do with the fact that we still haven't seen the official location of the rover at RMC 86.0000 after 2 days. 🤔

      Worth mentioning that in my out-of-the-loop experience, the #MMGIS people are figuring the location out in no time, or, in about half an hour from the time they get into their office in the morning, once the relevant images have arrived.
