Welcome Anthropic as a Corporate Patron sponsor of the Blender Foundation’s Development Fund!

@Blender It's not the announcement, that's tone-deaf. It's the actual acceptance of dirty money by a bad actor that's tone-deaf.
Just in case you forgot: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c5y4jpg922qo
They paid $1.5bn because they were IRREFUTABLY CAUGHT PIRATING.

@Blender This is terrible, if you can not understand why this is terrible you should not only ask yourselves if you are the bad guys, you should also answer yes.

Note: partially reworded the social media announcement so it sounds less tone-deaf about the controversial nature of the membership.
@Blender damn this sucks; please reconsider.

Make sure to check out the full message on https://www.blender.org/press/anthropic-joins-the-blender-development-fund-as-corporate-patron/ and the funding policy at https://fund.blender.org/funding-policy/ to get the complete picture.
@Blender@mastodon.social
Yes, the extra details are lots of gum flapping that changes nothing. They gave you a dump truck full of blood money in exchange for you changing policies to benefit them at the expense of your users.
You made a bad decision. I hope your post mortem involves identifying how you failed to read the room so badly. -

@Blender Dirty money.
I understand that the money is attractive and useful, but letting yourself be used by a bad actor trying to launder their reputation is shameful. Is shame just not a factor at all any more if there's some money on the line?

@Blender Thanks, I hate it! 🤮
-
@Blender Uh so, you are taking money from a company that enables war crimes, destroys our planet, destroys our society and steals from the very ppl that made blender successful, the art community?
No matter how it's "worded", this should be declined and Antropic be told to… to put it politely to just go away. So if Palantir comes waving with money, you'd accept that as well?
@keeya Meta was already a corporate sponsor, as are Google, Nvidia, Adobe.

I can easily find a donate button on their website.
But I can't find a "contact us" page.
I want to ask them how many Gazan babies need to be crushed under rubble, starved, have legs blown off, be blinded, or carried to a hospital by their distraught parents in multiple plastic bags hoping the doctors (who haven't yet been kidnapped and tortured) can sew them back together and bring them back to life ... in order to pay for 2 blender developers?

@Blender jesus christ

@dianaprobst @Blender To be fair: This donation does not mean that every change of code at Blender from tomorrow on will be "in favor of Anthropic and their hunger for every bit of information on the planet." It just killed Blenders integrity for now.
But a change in update-strategy these days is adviced: Check what's being changed, what's being fixed and if you truly need the update on day one. If not, wait at least for a week or so and see what the consensus of the user-base says.
-
@fsiddi what's in it for Anthropic?
@greg Can't speak for them, but they see Blender as a project worth supporting.

@Blender Taking money from the military contractor that’s actively destroying the careers of much of your user base by stealing their work doesn’t seem like a good way to stay popular with those users, but maybe it’s just me

@Blender Failing to understand the problem does not do you any favors.
If you're *really* fucking confused why people don't want this shit, you could always just FUCKING ASK US.

@Blender just another garbage company. Gfy.

@fsiddi
1. Why even accept donations from a company that isn't profitable?
2. How come you didn't realize the PR disaster?@art_codesmith
1. It's a donation
2. I expected a concerned/negative response like for other corporate memberships in the past, hence we try to make it very clear that this is just a donation. This is quite intense.
