    When my wife turned 50, she and I and our two kids went on a six-week European holiday - then when I turned 50 a few years later, she gave me a pen. She turns 60 next year and is making noises about another overseas trip, but I think I'll just use my pen to write her a card.

      @fesshole I mean, did you share your pen with her? You went on the 6 week holiday right?

                  @fesshole

                  questions
                  -who wanted the trip?
                  -who planned the trip?
                  -who paid for the trip?
                  -who enjoyed the trip?
                  -how expensive was the pen?

                    @fesshole Funny, I had the exact opposite issue with my now-ex wife. She always wanted something really expensive for her birthday (brand-name handbag or similar), but for mine I got a holiday that she would also go on. But she was always about the money, and absolutely fleeced me in the divorce (caused by her infidelity).

                      @HunterAnton @fesshole this comment only works if you know who payed for it. If he payed for it then yea I see and issue here but if she paid for it then I see where your coming from. Now if someone else paid for it which I doubt cause the wife is the one making the plans unless the kids pitched in to do do it then the kids should do the same for dad.

                      So tdlr he paid= she selfish, if she paid for herself= he has no say, kids paid for it = they are assholes to their dad and she is kinda eh

                        @linkerman @fesshole

                        Or... they paid for it from the joint account because they are married and she took time off work to raise the kids and does a load of unpaid labour in general so, like a lot of couples, their money is shared and so the concept of "who paid for what" is irrelevant... unless the man thinks he pays for everything because he values money higher than her unpaid labour and he never talks about this so he's bitter.

                          @HunterAnton @fesshole I think your doing a lot of assumptions here I think a marriage should be equal no one should get better "presents" then the other that's the point of a marage to be a team not to be "well I took time off work to raise the kids" that's if she even did that they could have had a nanny for all we knew or she didn't take time off and neither were gone for the kids
