So, I started to volunteer in our local community centre to help (mostly) elder people with their computer and smartphone problems.

It's fascinating. We have people there up to their 90s and they are all every open for change.

We remove ad ID's from phones, change default browsers, switch from MS Office to #Libreoffice.

And for next time I already have a date with an elder lady to switch her old Windows 10 laptop to Linux Mint.
And she is not the only one!

What a time to be alive.

@sturmsucht A lot to be learned on how to be young from some individuals of the elder generations, compared to the apathy of some other younger individuals.

      @sturmsucht Well done Chris

That's my experience too, those with the least technical skill are the most open to change (nothing to lose I guess...)

Good luck with your mint install! #endof10

@sturmsucht This is exactly the kind of thing I'm hoping to get involved in, I'm doing research right now on Zorin OS (tip of the iceberg) in order to help folks accomplish the same goal.

@sturmsucht this is great! I'd love to do something like this but just moved from the US to the UK and don't really know how to even look for this kind of thing

(it's so funny how moving to another country makes you realize how much system knowledge you just take for granted.... Like, I have to relearn where to go to buy/find/do specific things that before didn't even require thought - I just knew 😂)

everyone thinks Chris is doing a great thing

but we all know he's after some of Grandma's cooking, some free food, and to steal recipes!

              🤭

              just kidding

              Chris: you're awesome

@sturmsucht Great work. As an older person myself I have turned to IT as a means of keeping the brain active. Dumping MS and migration to #Ubuntu on my laptop has felt quite liberating. As has ordering a @jolla phone. I don't have the patience to do what you do though!

Have you thought of making a network of old people facing the same challenge to find a solution for it?

@sturmsucht - for better or worse, its the older generation who created the technology the younger crowd take for granted.
                    You're welcome.
They may not know how certain products work or are installed now, but they're keenly aware of what it means to have it.

@nuwagaba2 I haven't. I quite enjoy the quiet time if I'm honest. I find it relaxes me. Perhaps something for the future?

Yeah, I have something for the future. It's about my community project which is trying to create a future without hunger. Can I share with you more about it?
