    @solonovamax @Em0nM4stodon Yes. Quietly.

    You'd be surprised how well this kind of thing works. "Oh we'll totally put it off for now. And we'll definitely rethink the way we were going to do it and not go with *this* Palantir-connected company. Hey, maybe we won't do it! Who knows!" They'll push out something smaller and ramp it up over time until it's just as bad.

    Assuming people let them of course, but... well, this keeps happening over and over, so my optimism is waning I suppose.

        @solonovamax @Em0nM4stodon Alright, I'll reword what I'm saying. (Character limits make this very hard.)

        They do things like this whole putting it off and saying we won't go with them, etc etc to get people to calm down and kind of forget about it for a bit. It's for show.

        We actually agree on that part, I'm just emphasizing the "it's for show" part of this.

          @solonovamax You're right. But we showed them what we're capable of, and that's already the first step towards victory. I've been anxious about this whole time, so seeing this news this morning made me really happy.

            @nazokiyoubinbou @Em0nM4stodon yes, it's all absolutely for show

            this is them just saying "actually, you misunderstood what we were trying to do. if you REALLY understood then you'd obviously be fine with it!!!"
            absolutely nothing has changed.

              Getting Global Age Assurance Right: What We Got Wrong and What's Changing

              Discord's CTO addresses community concerns about age assurance: no mass ID collection, new vendor transparency commitments, and a delayed global launch until second half of 2026.

                But this small victory means we should keep pushing for better privacy practices, everywhere.

                      @Em0nM4stodon

                      I had an account I barely used, to go into the "servers" of some projects that offer no other way to ask for help (some Minecraft mods, browser extensions, etc.).

                      I got an email a few days ago saying it was permanently deleted. Good riddance.

                      That said, I imagine Discord will lay low for a while, and try to do this again in a few months.

                                  Edit: Just to be clear, I still encourage everyone to move to better platforms and delete your Discord accounts (even if there was no age verification at all). Discord isn't a privacy-respectful platform.

                                  But this small victory means we should keep pushing for better privacy practices, everywhere.

                                  This means they are listening. This means you have the power to make things better, for yourself and for others.

                                  Celebrate that. And keep pushing back.

                                  @Em0nM4stodon misleading headline. They didnโ€™t cancel it, they just pushed it back while they finish fleshing it out. Itโ€™s progress, but not much imo

                                      @solonovamax @sar @Em0nM4stodon

                                      The person responsible for that headline should be flogged, at least metaphorically. "Canceled...for now."

                                      Oh, you mean delayed? Postponed? Rescheduled?

                                      Even with the qualifier at the end "canceled" lends the act a more permanent connotation than they actually intend.

                                      ...thus concludes my channeling of my news editor father . . . for now.

                                        @phillip
                                        It's important to celebrate that our collective action had an impact.

                                        Is this solving the problem entirely? Of course not. And Discord is still a privacy-hostile platform, even without age verification.

                                        But the fact that people got angry, and this made the platform move in a less privacy-hostile direction is a win. And we need to celebrate each win. No matter how small.

                                        It doesn't mean we are leaving the fight. It means we can enjoy this small victory today, then fight even harder tomorrow.

                                          @Em0nM4stodon my guess is that #discord had a "#PiperChat moment" and realized that their entire business model IS a #COPPA violation!
