A good trick is that when you find somebody whose posts you like, take a look at what people they follow (or boost). Chances are they're interesting to you as well.I know a form of following lists is coming. But I agree that the initial finding people is the most difficult part here. Once you have enough people, finding new people happens naturally through their boosts.

My experience has been that the more people you follow, the better your timeline is.
I found that the amount of fun I was having made a jump once I got over around 600 accounts.
I found a few people I liked at first, then followed who they followed. Then looked in that group's follows and repeated the same.
Then as people liked or boosted my posts. I would follow them and go thru their follows and add people found there.
It takes a bit of time.

@Susan60@aus.social @ombialik@mastodon.world that's good, but in addition, my one simple bit of advice for confused noobs is to follow hashtags of their interests, which inevitably leads them to all sorts of relevant peeps & chats... as well as sometimes also to many serendipitous places
