      @nberlat.bsky.social

      It's hard for me to understand "Jewish identity is linked to an illegal and immoral war qualifies as antisemitism!" in practice.

      As an American e.g. I accept responsibility for us attacking Iran.

      Is it reasonable e.g. for me to ask American Jews to accept responsibility for Israel attacking Gaza? If not, what should I do?

        @CartyBoston @nberlat.bsky.social That's not an equivalence.

        Americans can pressurise their government, their lawmakers, contact their media and so on.

        Israeli citizens of whatever religion can do the same.

        But I, as a British Jew who has only once ever been to Israel, and that was 20 years ago for a one-week holiday, why am I expected to bear any responsibility for the actions of that country's government?

        I don't live there, I don't work there, I don't speak the language, I have no elected representatives there. Why am I any more responsible than my non-Jewish next door neighbour?

        It makes no more sense to ask me (or American Jews) to take responsibility for the war than it would if you'd told an American-born Muslim to take responsibility for 9/11.

          @losttourist @nberlat.bsky.social

          Israel enjoys very strong support from the US culturally and financially, their Muslim enemies don't. Let's not pretend otherwise.

            @CartyBoston @nberlat.bsky.social

            Undeniable.

            It's also undeniable that much of that support (both political and financial) does not come Jewish people or groups. And many American Jews will not be in favour of the current Israeli government or its military goals.

            So to say all Jews, or even all American Jews bear some kind of responsibility is way out of line.
