Il Tempo: Intellettuali spompati e pupazzi russo-cinesi: adesso serve un neoatlantismo

Le immagini della Storia parlano da sé: gli iraniani sperano e festeggiano, mentre nei nostri studi televisivi i presunti «esperti» hanno la faccia lunga e triste, vere e proprie «vedove» dell'ayatollah Khamenei. Poveri intellettuali spompati. Da dieci anni non ne azzeccano una: non hanno capito Brexit, non hanno capito né la prima né la seconda vittoria di Trump, non hanno capito l'affermazione in mezzo mondo di quelli che hanno spregiativamente bollato come «sovranisti», e anche in epoca Covid hanno sparacchiato a casaccio, curando sempre di non dire mezza parola contro la Cina. Negli ultimi due anni, poi, pur di dare addosso a Trump (e Netanyahu), hanno tifato per Hamas, poi per Teheran, perfino per Maduro a Caracas.
E allora? E allora certo che una guerra porta sempre con sé rischi fatali, e non si tratta - dal nostro lato - di farci prendere da un'assurda esaltazione bellicista. Figurarsi. E tuttavia occorre tenerci alla larga da due mali. Il primo è il lavorio dei numerosi pupazzi russo-cinesi che operano qui in Italia: politici, ex uomini delle istituzioni, giornalisti, spontaneamente (in molti casi spintaneamente) impegnati in una costante azione da quinte colonne di Pechino e Mosca. Per lo più stanno a sinistra, ma qualcuno è stato appositamente inventato per creare problemi al centrodestra. La seconda tendenza da evitare, opposta alla prima ma a sua volta confusa, è quella di un europeismo di maniera («ci vuole più Europa»), come se questa Ue avesse funzionato bene (non è stato così, lo sappiamo), e come se avesse senso in futuro schierarla senza e magari contro gli Usa. Assurdo.
La strada da seguire è invece una terza, difficile e a tratti impopolare: quella di un neoatlantismo capace di tenere il filo del rapporto con Donald Trump e gli Stati Uniti anche nelle giornate difficili. Ricordando alla Casa Bianca che per rendere di nuovo grande l'America («make America great again») occorre avere a cuore l'intero Occidente. «Make the West great again», come disse benissimo Meloni a Trump alla Casa Bianca. La sfida è tutta qui.

The images of History speak for themselves: the Iranians hope and celebrate, while on our television studies the so-called “experts” have long, sad faces, veritable “widows” of Ayatollah Khamenei. Poor, puffed-up intellectuals. For ten years they haven’t gotten one right: they didn’t understand Brexit, they didn’t understand either of Trump’s victories, they didn’t understand the rise of those who scornfully labeled as “nationalists,” and even during Covid they blurted out random things, always careful not to say a word against China. In the last two years, just to give Trump (and Netanyahu) the finger, they cheered for Hamas, then for Tehran, even for Maduro in Caracas.

And so? And of course a war always carries fatal risks, and it’s not about letting ourselves be seized by an absurd bellicistic exaltation. Imagine that. However, we need to keep ourselves away from two evils. The first is the work of the numerous Russian-Chinese puppets operating here in Italy: politicians, former institutional figures, journalists, spontaneously (often pushed to it) engaged in a constant action as fifth columns of Beijing and Moscow. Mostly they are on the left, but some have been deliberately invented to create problems for the center-right. The second tendency to avoid, opposite the first but also confused in itself, is that of a conventional Europeanism (“we need more Europe”), as if this EU had worked well (it hasn’t, we know), and as if it makes sense to align it without and perhaps against the US. Absurd.

The path to follow is instead a third, difficult and at times unpopular one: that of a neo-Atlanticism capable of holding the line on the relationship with Donald Trump and the United States, even in difficult days. Reminding the White House that to make America great again (“make America great again”) you need to have at heart the entire West. “Make the West great again,” as Meloni said very well to Trump at the White House. The challenge is all here.
