@paul - you kind of already answered your own question: it has only been 3 days. It's normal for cats to take a few MONTHS to adjust to a big change, so 3 days is nothing, and you really do just need to be patient.

That said, you can definitely help matters along by making sure both cats have lots of everything they need. Lots of access to food, water, safe spaces to hide, attention from humans (if desired), toys, cozy things, litter boxes, etc. No reason to fight for resources when everything is abundant.

And make sure they have "safe" ways to explore and get accustomed to each other, like letting them sniff things that smell like the other one, or be in spaces where the other one has been, without pressure or rush.

@Polywog That checklist is pretty much what we are doing.

    Thank.

@paul @Polywog can you try to give her high value treats while smelling like the other cat?
Once she gets used to you smelling like the other cat, just start playing/petting with one cat, then immediately fo play/pet with the other, and repeat. It'll help them get used to each other's scents faster.

Sissy is not taking to having a newbie in the house.

We are still having to isolate Millie to the "cat room" and let them be in the same room for a while together. We're spending time with her. She has really taken to me.

Sissy is being such a witch.

It's going to take patience and time. It's only been three days.

I feel bad for Millie. She is ready to be out all the time now.

Sissy even hisses at us if she smells Mellie on us.

        Advice?

@paul we put old cat's things in with new cat when they were separated. New cat would lay on them for a bit. When we took them out, old cat would smell new cat on it and seemed to think "oh this is fine really because I associate the smell with my favorite toys."

At least that's what I think happened.

Also new cat stayed off by himself in the basement for a good month before he came upstairs to check out the rest of the house. He was a stray.

@chickpeapole We have been doing the smell swap. Sissy even hisses ay us after we come back because we make sure we are scented.

Every time we do, we give her treats.

Visits between them are structured and we give Sissy extra attention and play after

@paul I think it just takes time. As someone else mentioned on here, it’s not uncommon for it to take weeks or months before cats get used to each other. Cats refuse to be rushed in all things lol. On the other hand, you’re probably already doing this, but since Millie is already quite affectionate with you, make sure to devote lots of quality 1:1 time with SissyCat too, so she doesn’t feel jealous or neglected (otherwise she’ll probably take out her frustration on Millie).

2/ Today was easier. #SissyCat was always a free feeder. That ended Thursday after Sissy went to bed.

Yesterday, the only time she got food was when #MillieCat was in the room.

We fed them small portions a half a dozen times per day.

At one point, Mellie went up to Sissy, who was laying on the yoga mat with me and were nose to nose, and just as they were about to get affectionate, Penny's cake timer, the old fashion kind with the loud bell, went off like a loud bell and scared the crud out of all four of us... Talk about timing. Literally, an inch away from each other.

Sissy heard Millie purring the earlier and that seemed to do something to her in a positive way.

@paul too bad about the kitchen timer thing. My cats always got very spooked with loud noises like that. Then I bought a countertop bell (like at a hotel check in) and gave them a treat every time I rang it. Now they come running to me when they hear it, and it’s helped them stay calm(er) about other sounds too.

3/ #SissyCat and #MillieCat update... Today is the 8th day and we did it! Millie, our new family member, an 8-year old shelter cat that has spent most of her time as Queen of the Rescue, is now roaming the house.

We didn't have a problem with Millie but our 4 year old rescue, Sissy, who we have had for 3 years, didn't take kindly to having another cat in the home.

Sissy is more playful. Today, Sissy dropped a play spring at Millie's feet and then turned around and brought one to me in the office.

Ending free range, free feeder eating did the trick.

We kept Millie in the Cat Room and brought her out and socialized them only when feeding and giving treats. We broke their eating schedules down to 4 small meals and two lite treat visits per day, so they met a lot. It only took an additional 3 days until Sissy accepted Millie. #CatsOfMastodon

Attached: 1 image 2/ Today, Millie Vanillie, the oldest cat in the shelter, nearly 8 years old, has come to live with us and share her life with us. Millie is the second rescue from the shelter. We have #SissyCat, adopted in September of 2021, and now #MillieCat Millie spent more than 4 years at the shelter and was there when Sissycat was. Penny and Millie know each other because since 2021, Penny normally goes to the shelter once per week just to socialize with the cats for an hour or so. From the Humane Society: "Congratulations to the sweetest old gal in town, Millie Vanillie 👏🐾 Today was a very special day for Millie. Today is her adoption day, making her the newest family member to a very loving family. They are so excited to bring Millie into their lives and we can’t wait to see what life brings her way. Millie was our oldest cat resident, leaving shortly before her 8th birthday. Congratulations Millie! 🐾🙏👏" #adoptafostercat #hsac #makeadifference #fosterasheltercat #adoptacat #adoptdontshop #CatsOfMastodon
