    No Algorithm Means No Secret Profile

    Just had a revelation thanks to @gumnos reply to a post encouraging boosting. When you post, reply or boost here on Mastodon you don't have the worry about how it's going to effect your algorithm profile or contribute to the secret data collected about you.

    Guess this is obvious, but just thinking about how users on other networks carry the concern for the invisible automated surveillance of everything they do. That's gotta suck.

      @mastodonmigration @gumnos YES! Boosts are the best way for people to get to know interesting profiles to follow.

        @mastodonmigration

        I've found myself intentionally NOT engaging with certain interesting content on other platforms precisely because I know that would mean it would misinterpret the signal as "Tim wants more of this [general thing]" when the only signal I want to send is "this particular thing is funny for very specific reasons your algorithm is too blunt to comprehend".

        Meanwhile here on the fedi, I can wantonly like/boost just because, without concerns that my timeline will start getting 💩 I don't want. A much more pleasant experience.

          Great observation. The psychological implications of always carrying the awareness that Big Brother is watching are fascinating to consider.

            @mastodonmigration I also like that you don't have to say "link in bio" or "link in replies" to avoid The Algorithm burying your post.

            You just post the link.

                @stefan @mastodonmigration @gumnos There's also no such thing here as a follow ratio. You don't have to manage your follows relative to how many are following you or whatever.

                And there's no 'follow-back' expectation, as a result.

                  Amazing how liberating all this freedom from surveillance is. 🤷
