Amidst a lot of theoretical discussions -- anyone out there using Zulip for a self-hosted community?

@pkirn it took them a while
Pretty weird feeling to move from IRC to Matrix to IRCv3 TBH.
Still on the fence though..Discourse has both forum+chat..but perhaps Im just going lightweight: discourse forum + (Obsidian)IRC(v3).@lvk oh yeah... chat is also in the self-hosted Discourse, though?
Not that the names and functionalities of all these options is in any way confusing

Discourse Chat

Discourse Meta (meta.discourse.org)
I'm of course forgetting this because I have no conception of the passage of time, though on the upside, my slowness in adoption means some things sort themselves out meanwhile
Those both honestly sound like better solutions than self-hosted Zulip.
And I tend to agree on IRC.
With some bots, etc., I think you can even resolve moderation issues. -

(Randomly, I did look up what it would take to host a Gopher server now, and ... there are a handful of people doing that!)
On usenet, I could always ping Panic...

@pkirn funny that you mention gopher/usenet. I see more communities doing that (search 'gopher' in https://tildeverse.org/). Perhaps webplatform-fatique is real, and less interfaces is a good thing.
Makes me think...what if we would be able to 'translate' repo wikis/issuetrackers into these ecosystems.
Also makes me realize: why do i need discourse forums/wikis **next to** the issuetracker/wikis of my repositories.. -

I'd love to see an actual use case. Despite the clear privacy crisis with ID requirements at Discord, most people I know are sticking with it -- even those working on open source-projects.
Feel free to tag anyone you might know, too.
@pkirn i think the main concern is that discord is in for a load of enshittification due to hitting the stock market. so people are trying to prepare for the likely even that at some point it will genuinely be too bad to use. then again, a lot of people still use twitter, so their standards are clearly very low

@tildesounds I mean, this mandatory ID rule is *not* a small thing.
They've already had a data breach. And you could try to manage a community without the content that requires it, but then you often get flagged as 'adult' if you so much as mention the existence of trans people (even though that's insanity but... you know, rising fascism in the USA and Europe...)

Some of this stuff, I'm skeptical honestly about being retro just for the sake of it... not to mention a lot of UI/UX from the time was pretty considered and legible. But that's a whole other discussion

@pkirn yea its absolutely not a small thing, i just think its the sort of thing unlikely to drive people off of discord consistently as long as the user experience remains fairly unchanged
ive not heard about getting flagged as adult for stuff like that yet , thats insanity.
but yea, my impression of people is that they are starting to put out feelers for alternatives, but arent decided on leaving discord yet

@pkirn (i am in this process myself and ik so are admins of other communities like glitch.cool) the main 3 alternatives i am aware of are matrix, stoat and zulip, i am actually currently running a poll on my youtube to gauge where adoption is at

@pkirn https://obsidianirc.github.io thats a default webbuild, but you can limit it like i did here: https://chat.isvery.ninja

@pkirn hehe sure thing! chat seems to be a plugin in the selfhosted discourse version. Haven't tried it though. I feel like discourse has lots of options integrations etc, which at the same time also frightens me (one big central blackbox for everything). For my microcommunity stuff I think Im just going for https://ergo.chat + bot via my https://nodered.org instance (it has ircnodes) to interface with other stuff (my repo wikis/issuetrackers etc).
